Last Saturday DH urinated, and it was all blood. The next couple of times he tried to go, nothing came out except a few drops of blood. This was out of the blue with no symptoms leading up to it. He called our doctor's service, and the on-call doc told him to go to the ER.
We went to the ER, and he asked me to stay in the waiting room until they were done doing any kind of procedures on him. I understood, so Montana and I waited until DH's nurse came and got us. Then, we went and sat with him until the ER doctor came in to talk to us. His urine test and blood tests were all normal. The ER doc said that they were going to have to leave the catheter in him until he could see a urologist because if they took it out, he would end up back in the ER having another one put in. It was hard getting to see a urologist, but our PCP finally got him an appointment yesterday. DH went in and was examined and the doctor told him that with what was going on with him, that it was probably bladder cancer. He is scheduled tomorrow (Friday) for a CT scan, then a cystoscopy. As you can imagine, this is horrifying to both of us. We were wishing that the doc wouldn't have mentioned cancer right up front like that. He did also say that it could be any of a long list of things, but once you hear the word cancer your mind wraps itself around it and won't let go. At least ours did. DH's brother is flying in from NJ Saturday to spend the day with us. The brothers are very close. He is a kind and loving man, and we will be glad to have him here. The doc also said that bladder cancer has an 80% survival rate. So, that's good. I am just so very scared for my husband.

I'm so sorry. But....I cannot believe that doctor mentioned the "C" word so soon! IMHO that is very irresponsible of him. There are so many things this could be.....a kidney stone, an advanced bladder infection....many things. Why he would plant that seed of worry in your minds is beyond me. I understand that it very well could be that but tests are in order to eliminate it. I hope and pray that you receive good news and that it's something easily treated and cured.

I'll keep him in my prayers. And I sure understand the concern, how scary.

Thanks Kitty, that's how we are thinking also. The urologist said he's seen a lot of these cases. Darn strange bedside manner.

Unfortunately, these doctors become insensitive to how their words can affect those of us who aren't used to hearing that word several times a day or more (like the doctors are). At least you know going into it how he is.....and can be prepared for his inappropriate and insensitive remarks. Some doctors are good at what they've studied but when it comes to the human interaction part they just s**k!

http://www.medicinenet.com/bladder_cancer/page3.htm If he has concluded that it is "probably cancer", that would seem to indicate that he has some reason to BELIEVE that it is, wouldn't it? If he doesn't have reason to strongly suspect cancer, he definitely should NOT have said "probably". It would "seem" to me that he is leaning towards cancer as being the cause, but it is wonderful to know the survival rate is so high. It sounds like if someone is going to have cancer, this is one of the better one's to get. I hope the doc is wrong, but if he is that convinced, it probably doesn't matter if he tells you now or in a week from now. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your husband. Cherie
