I think my son went through about 10 hampsters. it was unreal! every time I turned around, I found a new furry lump in the bottom of the cage. The salesman said they only live a couple of years, and its hard to date how old they are unless you see um born. The last two were witnessed births, and that helped. We have buried snakes, cats, rats, hampsters, trained fleas (dont ask) lizards, turtles, and assorted creatures that wandered into the house, including the stupid frog that he refused to dissect in science class! I was ready to get my gun everytime someone mentioned bringing new things into the house. Its wonderful that he loved animals so much, but I was sobbing with him when they left us. yes, my toilet accepted its fair share of gold fish, and popeyed gold fish too.
