I missed the show unfortunately. For some reason, you can't seem to get Ophra on over here in the UK even though we have channels from the US ... it's pretty frustrating at times especially when there is a show on something that you would find interesting!!
There is a post on the RSD forum about the show and many members were saying how they felt like they were sat upon the stage as a lot of the symptoms of Montel described to be MS, fitted for them also! I have always talked to my doctor about the possibility of MS and so as my mum. My nanan had Progressive MS and she had a lot of the symptoms that I have - her legs gave way and so do mine, she was very sensitive to weather changes and so am I etc. If we mention anything to my Doctor about MS, he will always say that that isn't what I have and that we should stop being concerned about it! We aren't "worried" about it as such but I think it has always been at the back of my mind seeing as I have some of the symptoms and it has for my mum also. My Doctor never did a Lumbar Puncture or MRI of the brain when I was diagnosed and sometimes I wish he did ... I know the tests are risky but I think it would put our minds at rest at least. I read an article on the internet somewhere that said that RSD and MS are the 2 Neurological Conditions that are very similary related and that they are in the same "branch" together. Some Doctors believe that there is a link between MS and RSD also and I have spoken to a few people who have been diagnosed with both illnesses. I really wish I could have seen the show - it looks as though it was very interesting!!

Ali, he was on the Oprah show. Can you get her show there?
His show is off the air. Only old ones being shown now.

Sorry Curious for misunderstanding! I think we can get Ophra over here but it is usually weeks later when the show comes on.
I'll have to have a look and see if I can find the show - thanks for letting me know!

I recorded it and started to watch it when I got home. But being new to this MS thing it was a little too overwhelming for me. I learned a lot but it was scary. He described that electric cable so well. I like how he said he bundles up the pain and puts it in a box. He's such an inspiration.
But when they said suffocation caused by chest hugs is the leading cause of death for people with MS. Another leading cause? Suicide. That's when I turned it off. |

I too had never heard of anyone dying from the MS hug, and was surprised when Dr. Oz said it was the number one cause of death in MS patients!
They spoke that the diaphram, just like any other muscle, just stops responding the way its supposed to, and the patient cannot breathe for themselves. Scary! I love that they addressed the depression issue, and also the heat. Just being able to lay down for a few minutes in a cool place can do wonders for me. I thought it was very informative.

Seems like there would be something about that on the NMSS website. I wonder where he's getting his info. I'm glad that they're attempting to make people aware of MS and it's sx but sometimes they just scare the daylights out of folks with nothing to reference for confirmation. I can't believe I've been dx for 4 years and never heard that before.

Hey all, I'm super tired today, but this Dr. Oz person gave poor information if the claim was actually that the hug is the #1 cause of death.
It was irresponsible for this information to have been flung out there with no details on cause and effect. It's lung disease, very typically pneumonia. If the hug is the underlying reason for the lung disease, she should have made that patently clear. If you do a little checking online, you'll find many authentic, empirical studies that detail this issue. Here's just one of the many I found: http://jnnp.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/79/9/1016 Friends, please never forget that television is a vehicle for advertising and not much more. The more sensational the show, the higher the ratings, thus, the higher the advertising revenues. I, personally, question the credibility of any medical or mental "expert" who has time and professional desire to become a sold-out television star.

I agree. Oprah has Dr. Oz on her show quite a bit and some will take his claims as gospel just because he's wearing a lab coat and has the title of "Dr.". I'm surprised Montel didn't correct him but sometimes it seems like he's going for the sensationalism and drama of it all, too. I don't doubt for one minute that he has pain with his MS but I'm sometimes skeptical as to how truthful he is to his viewers regarding his sx. I guess I've just become distrustful and cynical in my old age! With so many treatments and meds out there I sometimes feel like we're all just guinea pigs for our doctors to learn with.

I have never liked Montel before on his show. The rhythm of his voice seemed different. On Oprah felt he showed his "face", was more honest and he made me cry. He cried, said he'd learned not to apologize. I laugh or cry or both within seconds, don't want to discuss it anymore with others. I'm in a chair, no one doubts my disability but even though I know better, looked at Montel walking pretty great, his pain doesn't show and for a second thought to myself "he looks good". I know better. DH, DS and DD are great but don't think they fully understand stuff they can't see
MS awareness month is good for me too. Being a PP, RR is not so familiar to me.
