I guess my dental work last month wasnt quite as successful as I thought it was. Developed an abscess (ohyayforthat-ick!)
Dentist cant see me till thursday. (day after I go to the neuro) Last time I felt pain this bad was probably when I had a near compound fracture of my right arm. I hope the antibiotics kick in soon and make the swelling go down, and I wish I could take something stronger for the pain. Oww!

Sorry to hear that you are in so much pain right now Erin. I hope the dentist is able to sort the abscess out and that your pain will go away real soon!
I had an Abscessed tooth last year and it hurt a lot! I wouldn't go to the dentist as I was afraid of making things worse but the abscess got worse and worse so eventually, I had no choice but to go. My Dentist extracted the tooth and said that it was a really big abscess and that it was a good job I went when I did otherwise it could have gotten a lot worse. I was SO relieved when I had the tooth taken out as the pain went almost instantly (other than the pain from the injections but I could cope with that)! My dentist showed me the abscess and it was so gross and very big. Thinking about you and hoping you get relief soon!

I had an abcessed tooth, and Wow!! did it hurt. Of course I was 100 miles from home going to a MIL (Yuck) Birthday party. My BIL gave me Tylenol with codeine he had, I needed something and I could tolerate it. Wow, it hurt! And I have a pretty high pain threshold.

This thread caught my eye because I had an abscessed tooth just a couple of months ago. Insane pain! Intense, throbbing, sharp searing pain. The first night I noticed a little dull throbbing, and the next day was not bad. But the second night?? Wowzers... I literally could not sleep and was in writhing pain... the kind where you literally can't sit still. I called the dentist at 7:30 that morning, and was in the chair by 8:30. He prescribed antibiotics and told me to take Ibuprofen. I said...really? ... I was up all night and that didn't touch it. He told me the antibiotics would work fast, but he did give me a script for a couple of vicodin just in case. He said not to fill it unless I needed it, but I really needed it. I was back in the drugstore by mid afternoon to fill it. Even with vicodin, it hurt, but was bearable. After two days, Ibuprofen was all I needed, but it still hurt for a week. Then I needed a root canal and crown. The cost of all that hurt just as much!!
But, yes, it was one of the most intense pains I've ever felt... right up there with childbirth... which I did without any drugs. It really surprised me that it hurt so much, and came on so quickly. And he told me I caught it early... some people wait until their entire face is swollen. Quote:

Erin, you might get better responses in the dental forum:

YES! dental abcesses can be VERY painful. The swelling from the trapped material, and the pushing on the dental nerves, can make it feel like your jaw bone is broken. They can call in some pain pills for you. I hope you feel better.

I dont ever want to do that again to my mouth. They had me totally stoned on Versed. I dont remember much of what happened, except that the nurse/dental tech was in too big of a hurry to get me out of the office after they were done (she was pushing me in a wheelchair)...and she was slow to respond when I told her to slow down and stop. Good thing I didnt have to pay for her shoes. yuck!

Yes, an abcessed tooth can be very painful. It's not something you want to fool around with either. It can raise havoc with your whole system/body.
When I had one the dentist put me on antibiotics for I think ten days. Then I could have the tooth (molar) removed by an oral surgeon. There was no way it could have a root canal as there is too much bacteria and such in it even if it is cleaned out well. Go to the dental forum and there is help there.

I can feel the antibiotics working now. Side of my mouth doesnt feel as huge as it did yesterday, and some of the pain is feeling better. My jaw did feel (still feels like) it was broken. Like someone had been smacking me around a bunch the past few days. I'm trying to not take too much pain medication because I want to keep my kidneys and I dont want an ulcer. At least the dentist told me that two Aleve's are equal to one of the prescription pain meds. I found a box of store brand Aleve at Walgreens and it was on clearance for $1.50! I'm just irritated. I thought getting that dental work done would be the end of dental issues for awhile. Now I'm probably getting my first root canal. argh!
