Default A solo getaway at a resort?

A friend of mine wants to get away for a week-end by herself, go to a resort/spa somewhere warm where she can just relax on the beach, get a massage, etc...not have to think about work or problems. A resort that has things to do even if it rains. Someplace that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Any ideas for a good place to go? And is it really safe for a woman (she's in her thirties) to go places alone these days? I'd like to offer her some suggestions, but lately a "getaway" for me is to go in the other room, shut the door, and play the piano.

Thumbs up

www.Rosehallresort.com

You can get a non-stop flight out of most major cities on Jamaican airlines. I book through Expedia and choose the all-inclusive plan with resort view and flight included. The rates are really cheap right now. It's a gated resort and just beautiful. We've been there three times now and you can get plenty of R & R. They treat you like royalty there.

There are just tons of cheapy getaways out there right now. She needs to decide what kind of spa treatments she wants, how far she's willing to travel, fly or drive, and what she's willing to spend.

Many 4-5 star hotels have spas and restaurants right on site. Sandals is a fabulous resort but most resorts book in double occupancy so she'll likely pay a premium.

Glen Ivy, Corona in SoCal is a spectacular outdoor spa with natural hot springs and great weather.

Hot Springs, Arkansas was one of my all-time favorite experiences, it includes a wonderful history, very unique spa treatments and it's all in a surprisingly charming little town that doubles as a national park.

No, women should never travel alone.

She can also take a weekend cruise package. They are pretty cheap right now, and a short jaunt away with folks waiting on you can do wonderful things for the empty cup.

Thanks for the suggestions so far...

OK, so it was a dumb question about women traveling alone! I guess what I meant was, are there places that are more "one-person" friendly, or places that you'd say would NOT be a good idea to go as a single.

Cindy, what all did you do in Hot Springs? What made it special or fun?
Maybe it's because I'm in Hot Springs all the time. I just have never figured out what the tourist draw is.

When I was in Florida, I was with dh - but he was at work.

I was in St. Augustines (any hotel BUT Scottish inn, LOL). All by myself, I felt very safe. There are taxis and shuttles to take you anywhere in town - smaller town. And St George st is all pedestrian traffic, if she wants to walk and shop - as I did.

Price depends on season, so call and book ahead. But there are tons of places to eat, and shuttle trains to tour the sights - about $16 for a 3 day ticket. The beaches are nice too, and lots of other stuff to do I didn't have time to get at.

I'm a small town girl, so it takes a lot for me to say I felt safe, you know? Heck, I live in Mayberry. But it's very layed back and low key.

Just after I stayed there, a friend of my sister's did the same - she loved it too, and also recomends it. Soon as I settle down there, I'm organizing a girl's weekend in St Aug's.

I know exactly what you mean. As an ex prison worker, and a person with a 3rd degree black belt in Kenpo Karate, I am more than capable of handling myself in danger, but there are so many places that are for couples, or families. I dont want to go to get a massage, then hang out by the pool if I am going to be splashed by kids. Kids are great, but when I get away for me, I dont want to baby sit someone elses kids while they are getting a massage, and have left their kids at the pool. I dont want to be sitting next to Joni and Chaci while they make out, or play grab and tickle either. I would just want a nice, quiet, private, relaxing stay without having others in my space.

Spa Finders has a great catalogue that lists 100's of spa's around the world. They have all price ranges and different activities, and if you call them they will recomend places good fro single travelers.

You can get the catalogue at most book stores that have a big magazine section or call them. They are on the web too. Also, if she can afford it Club med does great singles packages to various locations.

I get it.

Huh... I didn't know there were such places. Dh and I would make reserves for a nicer restaurant for our anniversary - we seldom go out - only to get stuck next to John and Kate types.

Don't they get this is why there are McDonald"s? After 9 pm, there should be *no kids allowed* places.

I like kids as much as anyone but ya know...
