He sounds so tupid, I think maybe it was a mixup? I'd have my lawyer send him a check, with a letter, stating that, he better not pull that again..

The next thing you say to that man ought to start with *My lawyer said*

And end with, *And if you have anything further to say to me, you can say it through my lawyer at (Phone number)*.

When I had my roof done...

We called a contractor that had done a couple roofs locally - that's how we got his number. Those people were happy with his work.

He came to the house with a tape measure and note pad.

He took measurements and gave us a rough estimate and said he'd call back with an exact total.

He did. We accepted. When he came back, he had a detailed list of exactly what every penny was for, evey thing he was going to do, and an estimate of how long the job would take - you can't count on the weather holding up for roofing.

He included a full yard clean up.

We had to sign, he had to sign we both got copies of that and a warantee.

It was as professional a transaction as ever I've had.

They came, they did a great job. They should all be like that.

But I have had people I've had to threaten off my property. Had to sic my dog on a cable guy.

*That chow like people?*

*Sure. He thinks they taste like chicken!*

Buh bye!

In case his business skills are at all representative of his roofing skills, I still say have it inspected before you do anything!

I'd call and leave a message that you are getting the roof inspected. Subract the inspection costs and then send a check for the balance, if it was done to your satisfaction.

You know, since it's that time of year, you might also want to warn your friends and neighbors about this guy.

All they'd have to do is call they guy and they'd fall victim.

I would let the Building Commision know about this guy. He might be scamming a lot of people just like he tried on you. Even if your DH might have given a verbal OK, there was no contract signed

No advice, but, yes. He certainly does sound unprofessional. Hope you can work things out.

Holly, count your blessings and don't give this guy another thought. Looks like you got your roof fixed for Free.

You are under no obligation to pay this guy. None at all.

I would not pay him one red cent. I would check with the agency in your state that covers licensed building professionals (the contractors, etc). He sounds like a scam artist who gets his business via intimidation and leaning on peoples "values". Sort of a way to force folks to pay whatever he bills them for.

Be aware that since there was not work order or written, signed estimate (key word "written"), in most states the work was done for free. You also may have needed an inspection and/or permit. Be also aware that payment usually makes it a legal contract so if you pay him you are "on the hook" for any more charges he may want to go after you for. Make sure (if you do decide to pay him) that you mark PAID IN FULL clearly on the check/bank draft and get him to sign a recpt for it that says the same. Listen to your friend the lawyer. I think it would be wise to pay her to draft him a nasty-gram informing him to cease harrassing you. IMHO that is where you should spend your money.

Thanks for all of the great support / ideas. I have to find a day when I'm not totally wiped out and brain-fogged to think about it all. Hopefully, I will have a day like that soon!

He hasn't called since the last nasty message when I first started this thread. So maybe he is done harrassing me. Maybe he realizes that he can not do anything.
