Thank you all for your kind words. Thank you for letting me share my memories. When a person close to you dies, everyone lets you grieve and sympathizes with you. But when it's a companion animal and you need to greive, most folks look at you funny and say, "It was just a cat. Get over it!"

I have to say, I've lost my dad and my sister, and I've euthanized my horse, my dog, and now Picabo. In many ways putting a companion animal to sleep has been worse than losing a family member. Harder to get over. It's something I did, not something that happened. I start thinking I should have done more, or done differently, or waited longer. But I can't go back now. She's gone.

Believe it or not, I got "compassionate" leave from work (on full pay) when one of our animals passed.

I was so upset that day there's no way I could have gone to work. I phoned to say I wasn't coming in and I told them true reason.

I was expecting to take the day off without pay, but you've no idea how I surprised I was next payday when I read my pay slip, to see that I'd been granted compassionate leave and they hadn't deducted any money from my wages.

I guess some bosses have a heart after all!

Awwww, MSArkie, I'm so sorry you had to say goodbye to your little furry Picabo. Perhaps she is keeping close watch over you from a sunny window in the sky.

I am so sorry you had to do this.

It is heartbreaking, I know. One of our past cats used to keep me company when I was gardening. I can remember crying over her for months after we had to put her to sleep for her thyroid cancer.

Picabo had a very loving caring owner and your respectful handling of this situation reflects all that love as well.

You did your best for her. Please don't start with any regrets. That is really easy to fall into when you are sad.

Our Sheba started coughing suddenly the other day, and I thought that was IT for her (vet warned of cardiac cough/fluid in lungs etc). But nope, she is back to her old self! (22 and counting). The long trip up North is coming up soon, and I am worrying already about this!
