Default How do I get my cat from peeing in places outside the litter box?

Is there a home made recipe I can put in these places or do I need to buy something. I know I'm not always good in scooping out the littler box so I have caught her in the recycling box which is full of the newspapers that are in her litter box. But she has also gone in some remote corners in the house.

I really understand your frustration! I'm a cat and dog lover but as they say,"cats rule and dogs drool" Have you had your cat checked for a urinary tract infection? I found that this is how my cat told me she had pain and something was wrong with her. That's a good place to start if you haven't yet. A cat's urine odor is so very hard to get out of carpet and I've tried everything. You may have to have your carpet cleaned professionally. Cats are terribly fussy about their litter box; it needs to be scooped at least once daily or have another litter box for your cat. It worked for my cat. I hope it helps!

some cats are very picky, and won't use the litter box if it is dirty.

we have a 6 month old male cat and he would try to get into the littler bag to go if he decided the litter box is not "clean" enough.
or he will complain...loudly
now he is old enough to go outside and refuses to use even a totally fresh littler box - he meows at the door to go outside.

We kept the little box next to the toilet for easy clean out while he was a kitten.

maybe she has a bladder infection??

I agree, I would definitely get her checked for a urinary tract infection.

My cats will sit at their box and wait for me to scoop it clean if there is anything in there. I have probably created my own monster here but I can't stand a dirty litter box and, apparently, neither can they! Like Jo's cats, mine complain loudly if I don't scoop it out quickly enough!

First I agree, get kitty checked to make sure there is not any urinary tract infection. Then you can buy something called Nature's Miracle to spray on where your cat has peed. That will take the smell away and help to make it where it will not draw the cat back to the same spot. Its sold in most pet stores. If its fresh sometimes vinegar and water will work. If there is one area on the floor that kitty keeps going to you can put aluminum foil over it as cats hate to walk on that and it will detract kitty from that area. So once the smell is gone and you have broken the habit of kitty walking there you should be fine.

I have very picky cats. One lil girl WONT toilet train, so a litter box in the house is a must. she is 22 and i am not going to push her any more. I scoop my box 2x a day, and all use it faithfully. If I forget to scoop for one day, she will pee out of place. I cant say I blame her. I dont like using a dirty potty.

Can you assign a child or husband the job?

or can you potty train them?

http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html

I toilet trained a few cats, and it works! Since I have this old lady cat that refuses to use the toilet, the others will refuse as long as their is a box in the house, so ...when she decides to cross the rainbow bridge, things are gonna change around here.

agreed. Get the cat checked for infection.

My cats let me know in not so pleasent ways when they think they're litter box is dirty, so it could be that too. I have two boxes, since my tiger kitty is very territorial. (two bowls, two boxes - just so the other one isn't attacked everytime she tries to do something )

I made some reminders in my computer calander to check up on their stuff so they don't have to resort to telling me the hard way that I've been slacking.

Years ago my roommates and I babysat a cat that did his job sitting on the toilet. No muss, no fuss. It was great I never tried doing that with my cats but it would have been cool. No cat litter to deal with either.

I have never tried this so I don't know if it works, but I have heard....

Put your cat and his/her litter box in a small room together for a few days. Cats do not like to soil their environment and if they are confined to a small area will use the litter box to keep the rest of their territory clean.

The big issue here though is keeping the box clean. Cats are clean freaks. They include their toilet in their neatness.

A funny note on how clean they are:
I wear a rubber mouth guard when I sleep because I grind my teeth. I take it out in the morning and brush it because it has "morning mouth." One day I took it out and set it on the sink. I was going to brush my teeth and my mouth guard when I got done in the shower. I pulled my towel off the sink when I was done showering and pulled the mouth guard off onto the floor. My cat came over, smelled it and promptly clawed at the bathroom throw rug and covered it up. I guess she told me.

We have a cat that refuses to use the litter box unless she has no other choice. She used rugs, backpacks, shoes, books... whatever she could get away with. One day DH had enough and put her in the back yard. Now she refuses to come back inside and stay. She will come in for brief periods, but wants back out to go potty. She goes to the door and meows.

We tried the pheromone sprays, keeping the litter cleaned, squirting her with water if we caught her peeing outside the box ...nothing worked. She was checked by the vet for UTIs and thyroid problems. She was just picky about where she peed.
