Default Injections

I have been getting trigger point injections for a while and they have been helpful. But, the last time it hurt worst then most. The injection was in the area of a herniated disc in the C5-C6 area. It has been 2 days and has remained swollen and painful to the touch. In the past, the pain receeded after a day and a half. The arm/shoulder is still stiff and sore if I attempt to lift it. I'm sure it is temporary, but it is worrisome. Is this anything to worry about? Has it happened to anyone else before?

Billy - I've had several cortisone shots into the neck (C5/C6)and left shoulder. I haven't had the response you describe; however, I do remember the doctors mentioning that it will take to a week to see the effects of the shots. Personally, I think I'd touch base with your doctor's assistant tomorrow if it isn't showing signs of improvement.

From my memory of the neck shots, the relief was immediately obvious (same with scalene blocks for TOS). On the other hand, the shoulder didn't like the shots and reacted very badly so it took a week to see the effects of the shots. I'm wondering if your neck has worsened enough that the shots won't be effective anymore. Have they discussed surgery options for the neck? I was told I'd need to have the C5/C6 fused within 2-4 years. That was almost 4 years ago so I know it's getting closer mainly due to increasing symptoms.

Unhappy Typical for me

Hi Billy, Sorry to hear you are hurting. Unfortunately, the stiffness and tenderness at injection site is a typical reaction for me. In fact, for me the stiffness and pain has been so severe (lasting over a week) that I have finally sworn i will never try another one. Unless the injection site is swollen, irritated, and shows signs of infection, I have a feeling your reaction is something that will just take time to ease, and probably nothing to get too worried about (though i know, that's hard when you are so uncomfortable!). Icing my neck usually helps me a little. I hope this isn't a sign of how future injections will go for you, as well; hopefully your Dr. will be able to shed some light on why your body reacted so strongly this time. Good luck, hope you're feeling better soon.

Thank you for the response. I have recieved the shots many times before, but never had pain or swelling last thiss long. It has been 4 days, so I will see what happens in a few more days. The shoot was near a herniated disc, so that might have had something to do with it.
