Help Pregabalin (Lyrica) vs gabapentin (Neurontin)

Yeah I know....Another post from the New Gerl

I'm currently taking Neurontin 2700mg a day (goal is to 3200), however @ my last visit my Surgeon mentioned that he would like to switch me to Lyrica... stating its a better drug, less side effect and other problems andfeels I will do better with it in the hospital and after surgery (with all the other meds I will be on)

Anyone ever switch before? Any advice?

Thanks

I know quite a few have switched meds trying to find a best one for them, and some long timers will do it after awhile just to rotate meds.

are you having any problems from the Neurontin?

I suppose some drs do have a preference... but why change if you are OK now?

hi

For me, pregabalin is a lot easier to live a more normal life on than gabapentin - less tired and felt better pain control. Fact that it's only twice a day instead of 3 times a day is nice too. However, if gabapentin is OK for you then may be worth keeping a switch in reserve!

Hi,I was on Neurontin for years but it did nothing for me. I was then switched to Lyrica, where i had many side effects [blurred vision, out of mind experiences, weight gain, etc]. I am getting off it now. Of course in saying that you might have not have these s/effects but go the the Lyrica site and get to know what to expect.Your dr. is in a better position to know than i am. Hope it works for you. regards

I have Ms.
I have been taking lyrica for a few years now, having swaped from Neurontin.
I can't say that I have seen any adverse side effects, though who can tell what is MS related or drug related.

I have been on Neurintin for about 7 months.... I dont know if it really helps or not, as I have progressively worsened over these last 7 month despite all the therapy, posture vest, tens unit and changing how I live my life. I have experienced weight gain 18 pounds as well as developed tremors in my right hand and arm (i don't know if that is related to Neurontin?)

Just got my Dr report from the last visit and this is what he stated about the switch:
I would like to make the switch as I feel Lyrica is more effective and has fewer side effects. I suspect she will need to go up on Lyrica or Neurontin and would like to transition her as soon as possible.

Really cant stand this weight gain garbage... it really sucks..when does it go away...and is it easy to loose the weight after im off these drugs?

Thanks

another option to consider is duloxetine - it's licensed for painful diabetic neuropathy but my neurologist has had good results using it in this kind of situation. I switched from pregabalin to duloxetine recently and so far seems to be controlling things better for me. You take it at night so also helping me sleep.

Sweet, I will look into that as well..... its been a crappy 9 days...been taking pain meds and muscle relaxers every 4 to 6 hr to try and get my pain under control with no luck.... went to the Dr today to get a toradol (sp?) 2 hrs and I had to walk out and leave, as I could wait no longer! My love for them as grown extremely today.... thinking of taking my dr reports and MRA report to the hospital ER and asking for help, as of course the Dr is closed now until 8am.

Wow I kinda needed to vent I guess.... thanks

I've tried Gabapentin, Lyrica and Flexeril.

Gabapentin I found didn't do anything, and you had to take so many freaking pills to ramp up the dosage! I think it also made me kinda tired.

Lyrica, wow, welcome to zombieville. I was so tired when taking this med. Hard to say if it really even helped, but from what I remember, I dont think so.

Flexeril, again this made me very tired. If the drugs Im taking are making me just zombie like, even if they help with my arm, I can't continue taking them because then whats the point you know?

I just take advil and/or tylenol now as needed.

Thanks
