If you're relaxing the scalenes as part of this movement here doesn't it also make sense, as part of this or some other exercise, to strengthen the posterior neck muscles? I'd think if you loosen anterior, you'd want to strengthen posterior. So Jo Mar...keeping the head straight and inline with the upper body would essentially be using those posterior neck muscles? Or could you do head raises in this same position? KY |

It does it automatically, based on this theory, if they are linked.

If you have a tendency to head forwards posture(common in TOS) then standard physio advice is to strengthen the deep neck flexors (longus coli and capitus) eg.chin tuck stretch exercise. Someone who has head forwards posture and a subsequent increased cervical lordosis may have tight neck extensors so if they are to be strengthed its essential that they're stretched a plenty.

my pt told me that my prior pts had me do the chin tucks the wrong way its a VERY small tilt otherwise you start to activate the scm etc. my SCM is bulging. ive been doing them for awhile but i dont know if its helping. im also bracing my neck |

I try to check mine with my hand to make sure they're not tensed and try to imagine a piece of string pulling me up at the back of the top of the head

i might try the swiss ball ex. today but i have a question one thing that scares me is getting out of the position, is it relatively easy to do w/o straining your neck? |
