If you have TrPs those have to get resolved first before stretching will do any good.

has anyone else experienced a scalene spasm from sleeping on your side,
basically the shoulder that's pointing up starts to flop forward and then it triggers a spasm.

Yes, I naturally sleep with my arm up under my pillow/head. I discovered that this gives me major spasms. I have to force myself to sleep with my elbows at my side, holding a pillow helps. Sleeping on my back doesn't work for me.

When I sleep on my side I have to make sure there is not too much contact or pressure at the neck or it will get compressed. Also, I sometimes flex the muscle on the opposite side and have to consciously let it go.
Also, this self massage helps me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duSNnBnqFts I like it better than using a heat wrap. The massage increases circulation from the inside. The heat wrap is nice at first, but then when I take it off, my neck feels cold. HTH some. |
