Default Cervical collar is helping with my TOS pain

Has anyone else tried this and had a good or bad result? My husband has asked me for six months to try a cervical collar to see if it would help with the neck and arm pain. I was driving past a medical supply store this morning so I stopped in and bought one. I have had it on just two hours and it has definitely reduced my pain. This is so strange because I don't feel like I am in perfect posture position or anything. It was only $11.00, it is soft and I am shocked it did anything good or bad.

I need more time to tell if it really is having an effect or not. Anyone else ever wear one of these things?

wow, please let us know what happens.

someone told me once that those things actually make your muscles weaker and thus your posture will be even worse without them

Heybro, that is what I am afraid will happen if I continue to wear it. I have heard several posters comment it can weaken the neck muscles and one of my PT's said it as well.

Today I am doing it as a test. I plan to take it off at the 3-hour mark and then journal my results. I will let you know how it goes. I can feel different muscles working in my upper back and neck as I wear it. I have both ATOS and NTOS so I can't imagine why this would be of any help. I may be miserable tonight for giving this a try, but at least my husband will be happy to see I actually "listened" to him and tried one of his suggestions. The "cutting my arm off" suggestion did not appeal to me, so I thought I would give this suggestion a try after complaining of pain for over a year.

i have wanted to cut my arms off as well!

i think it is funny that you say you may pay dearly for it tonight. that is how it always works! you don't find out until later!

also, it is funny the stuff we will try. no one can help us but they all throw in their "suggestions"

i once rolled my arms in cabbage and saran wrap cause some person suggested it! hurt like hell the next day!

I think it helps to support the weight of the head which can be about 8-12 lbs, so it lets the neck muscles relax a little bit.
Short term as needed during bad times to take some strain off the neck should be oK, but not a constant or long term thing for the reasons stated in the earlier posts.

I had finally got one for long car trips or bumpy roads , but didn't use it much, but keep it just in case...along with all my splints, elbow pads & helper stuff.

yup, ive been doing this for a year now. when i sit and do things in the kitchen etc. it MAJORLY helped

im using the cheapo foam ones. a full blown neck brace would've probably been better but i agree, not long term

Just brainstorming here. Maybe there is a time and duration to wear it that would be helpful. If it helps with neck posture, maybe 2 hours in the morning to program that in. Or if the issue is fatigue, maybe 2 hours late at night to give the neck a rest. Or it could be distributed--an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening.

So we have three variables to experiment with: duration, time of day and frequency.
