I'm a stomach sleeper naturally. Up until my surgery, I slept on my stomach with one arm cradling my head and the other bent under my stomach. Is that not the worst TOS sleeping position ever?
Anyway, after surgery (bilateral), I piled three pillows. One slightly leaning up against the headboard, then one resting halfway down the initial pillow so it was at a greater angle, then one covering the top half of the initial pillow up the headboard of my bed a bit. Then, I had a pillow on either side of me that I pulled up into my armpits a bit so my arms were completely cradled. Having that secure feeling of being "nested" made me not crave being on my stomach. This only worked while I was in a good amount of pain though. Now that pain is at a more manageable level (a bit greater than pre-surgical pain levels) I'm back to sleeping on my stomach again. I'm sure if my PT saw me doing it she would absolutely flip!
I know she told me that sleeping on my side is horrible though because it causes my shoulders to collapse in together. I'm very hyper flexible in all joints so it may not be a problem for "normal" people, but if I rest on my side my top shoulder rests on my cheek which obviously compresses everything. She did tell me initially that it was better to sleep on my stomach than on my side if I couldn't manage to sleep on my back though I'm sure she wouldn't be thrilled to see where my arms were resting!
Hope that was clear enough and helps you out a bit! Good luck!
