I find that menthol gels/creams like Icy Hot do reduce the pain (with or without massage). Have not noticed any long-term effect though.

None of the prescription stuff I tried (lidocaine or compounding creams) did anything for me.

Hi Chroma, all OTC, I used this:

It's relatively side effect free but a very strong feeling topical. It's a counter irritant as well.
Another one I use is this:

But the most powerful one is another which I use sparingly, let me find out and let you know.

My big problem is to find my scalenes can't seem to locate them.
