I'm having surgery next week. I was telling my 6yo that the surgeon would take out my top rib. He looked perplexed and asked "when will they put it back?" I said they wouldn't put it back, I don't think you really need that bone. He said "But, you DO need it, your arm won't work without it, you said so Mama!" I said, Honey, I meant that my arm wouldn't work right for a while after the surgery, but, it will get better. He thought about this for a moment, then said "I think I'll keep the bone for you, just in case you do need it, you never know."
So funny, he just can't wrap his sweet little 6yo brain around letting someone take one of your bones out, on purpose!! Made me laugh, thought I'd share |

I also had surgery when my son was 6. It really scared him. I remember wanting to show him one of the scars (so he could see it wasn't so bad as the bandages looked) and he ran away.
I've thought of that moment a lot in the last 9 years. It's one of my "bad mom moments" when I wasn't as sensitive to his fear and worry as I wish I'd been. It must be really overwhelming to see your parent and main support in such a vulnerable position. It's great that you are talking about your surgery ahead of time and helping him to make sense of it. Good luck, Kelly |
