hi, Ive been thinking about donating some money to a needy cause. I was looking at world vision online to donate some money to Sudan. I don't want to donate to an organization where the money will not be well spent. Can anyone recomend WVO or maybe something else?

I haven't heard about that organization. I'm sure someone else will come along with some info about that.
In the meantime, I give a small amount every month to these organizations. I have a special place in my heart for the homeless and for sick children. BOSTON RESCUE MISSION KINGSTON HOUSE PO BOX 849100 BOSTON, MA 02284-9100 (617) 482-8819 PINE STREET INN PO BOX 3215 BOSTON, MA 02241-3215 (617) 521-7629 HABITAT FOR HUMANITY INTERNATIONAL, INC. PO BOX 1088 AMERICUS, GA 31709-1088 (229) 924-6935 CHRISTIAN CHILDRENS FUND PO BOX 26507 RICHMOND, VA 23261-6507 (800) 776-6767 CHAI LIFELINE INTERNATIONAL OFFICE PROJECT CHAI DONATION 151 W 30TH ST NEW YORK, NY 10001-4007 (212) 465-1300 THE SMILE TRAIN PO BOX 96231 WASHINGTON, DC 20077-0001 (877) 543-7645 The first three are for assisting homeless people. The last three are for helping children, who are coping with severe medical problems, and their families. I'm probably going to also be adding St. Jude's Hospital to my list next month. If you're interested in helping in a worldwide way, Habitat for Humanity and The Smile Train and Christian Children's Fund all work internationally. Just my humble opinon in my little corner of the world ![]() Barb ![]() |

Ronald McDonald houses always can use and put to excellant use funds. Our family needed support multiple occasions. It saved the family sanity to be with the child, improved the qualitiy of life and support of families there just like them.
Quality of life of a child is a precious gift, Not only that , you DO NOT want an agency that a small percentage of your funds go to the actual assist, and the majority goes to funding organizational needs. Read up on Ronald McDonald Houses and the needs. di

i've got a couple that are near and dear, james
one is the joyful child foundation in memory of samantha runnion, which is based in your neck of the woods: www.thejoyfulchild.org - the runnion/donnelly family have been close personal friends for many years and this is a terrific organization. this CA 501 (3) (c) was established by erin runnion and her husband, kenneth donnelly, within months of samantha's abduction and murder in 2002. the other was founded by a fellow TOS'er named mary stadelbacher (whose poster name is easternshorelady) called shore service dogs, i believe, based in salisbury, MD.: www.shoreservicedogs.com is the link if i'm not mistaken (jo55 put it up in the our pets subforum for service dogs, so check there if this one doesn't work - located in the general part of the neurotalk board...). mary rescues abused and stray dogs and trains them to become service and emotional support dogs for the disabled. she recently was featured in the media for an interesting approach to fundraising, james... she has taught her dog, major, to paint with his mouth and his artwork fetches a pretty penny in donations for this worthy cause. maj even ended up on the tonight show in some kind of a paint-off vs. leno's kitty-cat. but it was totally rigged, i'm tellin' ya... cuz the kitty won! ![]() then of course, if you have extra and would like to send some $$$ to MOI, well, ahem... we'll talk later, james... ![]() alison |

Listen to DiMarie- there's ALOT of agencys (sp?) that most of the money you give goes to administration, etc. (and the "etc." is what gets most of the money I imagine) and a very small percentage goes to the actual cause. But there are also alot where most of the money goes to the cause. Another good one that I've given to is the St. Judes Hosp. that takes all children regardless of whether they can pay or not. A friend of mine went there when he was young to be treated for Hodgkins Disease.

You can specify which country you want to send your funds to, including for children of the US. Right now they are trying to aid children in South Asia following the flooding brought on by monsoons. They also have a matching gifts campaign. This is the orginization American Idol, AT&T, Ford and others raised funds for last spring. On AI, they showed in Africa how $10 would buy a mosquito netting to protect a family from malaria, and $6 would pay for malaria vaccine that could save the lives of 4 children. Incredible work. Doctors Without Borders is also great. Always the local no-kill animal shelter/Humane Society. |

One particular charity I like is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital .... They are an amazing place, and they never turn anyone down because they can't pay. Someone here (Red maybe?) had a friend that went there growing up.

James,
I am walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in October. It is a 39 mile, 2 day walk and I am looking for sponsors. I would be so appreciated of any donations you can give. I lost both my mother and brother in one month this year to cancer, so I am doing this walk in their memory. Please take some time and vist my site below and you can read all about what the money goes for. Thanks Peggy http://info.avonfoundation.org/site/...s_tafId=195083 If this does not open for you, you can go to www.youravon.com/pschatzberg to get to the walk info from there.
