Does anyone here watch the TV show Grays Anatomy?
If you watch it, what do you think about how the show is handling the injury that Dr. Preston Burke suffered to his Brachial Plexus? For those who don't watch, Dr. Burke is a surgeon, a top surgeon in his field (he's a cardio-thoracic surgeon I think), so he needs his hands/arms to work properly to be able to return to surgery. The injury to the brachial plexus was caused by complications from a gunshot wound and the surgery to repair the gunshot wound. Personally, I loved the mini-fight that Dr Burke had with Dr. Yang about the recovery time and necessary PT after surgery... how he said progress is measured in months and years not weeks and days... he also said something about how success is measured (I forget exactly what he said but it was good). So what do you all think? The injury, the surgery, the complications, the physical therapy, the tremor he currently has, etc... Has anyone else sat there silently cheering at the TV because you realize that a friend or family member is watching the show and they might finally "get it" by watchng Dr Burke go through something similar to what you went through??? I would love to hear what everyone else thinks.... and if you haven't watched the show you might want to start watching ![]() Liz

I didn't see it! Rats
![]() There's a website for injuries like this - TBPI's. Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries. Most are from motocycle accidents, also gunshots. As long as the nerve root is still attached to the spine, a lot of these have (but not all) have good outcomes, because they do surgery immediately if there is an open wound, instead of waiting months or years like we have to do. And if part of the nerve is badly damaged they will often replace it with a nerve graft. There are also OBPI, Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Injuries, these are the newborns that Drs pull from the mother's womb by the shoulder, sometimes breaking the collarbone. These repair surgeries aren't always as successful, they have to wait months for the baby to be big enough to go under general anesthesia - since it's not life-threatening. And sometimes the nerve roots are abrupted. Even skin grafts aren't always successful because of the amount of time that has passed. The baby's arm sometimes never works, just hangs at his/her side, or has clawed fingers - so very sad ![]() Dr Nath does both types of surgery, but more children than adults I think. Now what's that web address? www.ubpi.org I think! United Brachial Plexus Injury Organization - is that right?? ![]() be sure and tell me if that's not right, ok? ![]() IT'S WRONG :O www.ubpn.org N, for Network, silly! HOWEVER my painfree, non-TOS family and friends also watch House. They commented that Dr. Burke should be sent to Dr. House and his trio of super-hero doctors who would find a quick, effective treatment even if they had to break into Burke's house to find a hidden cause for the lingering malady. LOL But...back to Gray's Anatomy....what do you think Dennie's occupation could have been that enabled him to have an inheritance check of 8 million bucks sent to izzie???AND Who is you favorite character?? Mine is Izzie. (Thanks for helping take my mind of my TOS) A "G's A" fan...Carly

I LOVE Grey's Anatomy......House and ER of course but can't watch any of them without my box of tissues....ok I am a cancer and do tend to be emotional can I blame the zanaflex??? or the diazepam....??? perhaps the lyrica, I take enough of it!!!!
Prefer House to mc dreamy but grey's is so goooood too and as a nurse I can see they are doing a good job to keep things real .....as we can all see with Burke's injury!!! k that's my 2 cents....... ![]() Victoria
