Check out this thread: Those who have had ribs removed and kept them; what did you do with it?

I was not allowed to under any circumstance though I let it be known that I very much wanted to. Just doesn't feel right that a piece of me was removed and then I'm not allowed to have it. I mean... it's about as "mine" as "mine" gets. :- /

Did you try and fill out the necessary paperwork well before hand or did you just "let it be known" to the hospital staff once you arrived? Big difference.

I actually put up a rather big fuss about being willing to do anything to keep it for more religious purposes than anything else. It just feels wrong knowing that it was taken from me and ultimately ended up being incinerated with a bunch of other human parts and tossed in the garbage. They told me that they were not able to give it back to me no matter what. I asked if there was any other way to go about getting it back for religious purposes and they said that there wasn't and that if I wanted the surgery I agreed to allow the rib to go to pathology then be incinerated. They did assure me, however, that it would be treated "with respect like human remains and not like garbage." Whatever that means. It all ultimately ends up in the same place.

That's odd, LLT - I'm surprised that even when you said you wanted it for religious reasons they wouldn't give it to you. When I had surgery with Dr. Pearl, I asked for mine and they just smiled and said "sure." And sure enough, when I woke up later in my room, there it was, sealed in a little specimen jar. Thus far I haven't done anything with it; not sure what I will do with it, but I was really curious to see it in real life b/c it appeared drastically different on MRI and fluoroscope. And, like you, I felt a little weird leaving part of my body somewhere. Still, I doubt I would have felt that way had it been a tumor rather than a rib bone...
