I am having cervical rib removal surgery on the 25th of July. I am supposed to move into the dorm on the 15th of August. I was wondering if this gives me enough time to recover, or will I still be in too much pain? Should I move my surgery to a different date? I am in pain now, and I am just hoping to get the sugary done, but I don't want it to make me where I have to delay college for a semester or anything.

Hello,
That might be a very close time frame for recovery, the last thing you want is to irritate /mess up the area after surgery. 2.5 weeks or so... Do you have a very experienced surgeon, what do they say about recovery times? What is your avg pain level & with or without medications? Would you be starting classes right away also? Or just getting moved in to the dorm?

Yes, i do and I have not really talk to him about the recovery times. Everything that I have found out has been online.
I have a pretty high pain tolerance without medication and with medication any pain I have had has almost disappeared. I would be moving into the dorm, I would not start classes for another week. There would just be a lot of freshman activities. |

If it is mainly the cervical rib causing the troubles , that is usually a fairly good result & recovery, but there are so many variables that can happen...
Have you tried the expert PT & posture route already? (sometimes w/ extra c rib that may /may not help though)

well I have known for about 6 months, but the doctor has rescheduled my surgery so many times. it took them so long to realize what was wrong with me.
Yeah i know its not gonna be an easy recovery but I have tried EVERYTHING besides this. I found a doctor in my city.. he has only performed a couple surgeries so a little nervous! |

If you are in Kentucky?? maybe contact this dr from our sticky thread list-
It can't hurt to call or send an email asking if he will look at your files & case. Quite a few of the TOS specialist surgeons do this for people. You can read about parbies search as well as a few others that have a thread about their search for care & surgery info. http://www.kleinertkutz.com/physicians/atasoy [Dr. Atasoy is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Louisville. He is an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and received the certificate for Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery in January 1989. In addition to general hand surgery, Dr. Atasoy has a particular interest in upper extremity nerve compression, especially thoracic outlet compression syndrome.]

Could you push school out one semester? If they give you a hard time over fees or anything, just wave your surgery in their face.
I can't imagine that you want to push out school, but I feel you're better off getting a full recovery before dealing the stresses of school. Just a thought. |
