Quote:

A sensory trick, or geste antagoniste, is defined as a physical gesture (such as a touch on a particular body part) that mitigates the production of an involuntary movement. This phenomenon is most commonly described as a feature of dystonia. Here we present a case of successful modulation of tics using sensory tricks.

Hi lara

These links are very interesting .I have just been reading your links on iron defiency and rang bells for me.My son was always low on iron and even had a alergic reaction to low iron where his body swelled and hives that was very big and left bruises.Im wondering if anyone else had low iron?

Lara 02-02-2014 04:00 PM

My daughter has constant problems maintaining normal Ferritin levels but she also has had extremely low B12 and has a few medical conditions that may play into all of this. She always only had very mild tics, more anxiety, ocd issues. I don't remember what my son's levels were. It wasn't something they were looking at way back then and any blood tests that were done routinely for him were Strep. related (GABHS). Both of them have immune system related issues. There also appears to be a link to Restless Leg Syndrome (yet another condition relating to dopamine dysfunction) which I have, although that's been very stable for me for a long time now thankfully.

EDITED to add: Katy, I'm just curious, but does your son have a gluten intolerance?

Altered monocyte activation markers in Tourette’s syndrome: a case–control study

Judith Matz, Daniela L Krause, Sandra Dehning, Michael Riedel, Rudolf Gruber, Markus J Schwarz and Norbert Müller

Quote:

The limited size of our sample—in particular with respect to interfering variables such as age, medication and co-morbidity—means that further intense research regarding the role of inflammation, infection, and the immune system in TS is required. Particularly functional tests and the analysis of genetic polymorphisms that encode for inflammatory cytokines or sCD14 would be of interest.
Quote:

Conclusions
The present findings point to monocyte dysregulation in TS. This possible dysbalance in innate immunity could lead to a higher susceptibility to infectious agents and a chronically latent inflammatory state in TS or could predispose to autoimmunity.

OT - Valacyclovir/Valtrex

Off Topic FYI

This first one is a single case study but it is a very interesting article despite the limitations and the financial disclosures of the doctor.

Quote:

Certain limitations need to be noted. This is a single case and may represent an epiphenomenon. The absence of a placebo control is inherent to single case studies. Lastly, a viral encephalopathy or even a viral infection was not definitively demonstrated in this case, although it bears close resemblance to a case series in which viral infection was definitively demonstrated.

The present case illustrates a dramatic improvement in symptoms normally associated with Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and possibly Autism Spectrum Disorders with antiviral therapy. I would wonder what type of illness or infection actually caused the febrile convulsions in the first place

Chemar 06-14-2014 10:00 AM

Well I know strep infections can cause febrile convulsions as can other childhood viruses and bacterial infections....I wonder if what these researchers were finding was more related to PANS rather than TS?

Lara 06-14-2014 08:33 PM

Well that was sort of what I was thinking.
I'd love to read the full text when it is free, otherwise it is a bit of a puzzle.
My first thought was about the actual conditions that preceded the seizures in all of those patients to cause the fever in the first place.

Interesting too, is that there was another article on that same page suggesting that low iron and low serum ferritin may be risk factors for febrile seizures in children.
