Default Brain Balance Centers

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone has used a Brain Balance Center for tourettes and co-morbid symptoms. They claim to offer a permanent solution. I have read some good things, although it is all anecdotal. Their website does have one research paper, but that is related to ADHD.

If I understand correctly, they believe that tourettes, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, and others are symptoms of something call Funtional Disconnection Syndrome. FWIW, this theory, at least on the face of it, appeals to me. I've always viewed my son's problems as symptoms of a larger issues, not independant syndromes.

Anyway . . . the have a regimine that is quite expensive and time consuming. I'm definitely interested. But I need to more confidence that it will work for my son. Wasting the money would be bad enough, but the last thing that I want to do with my son is "chase cures."

Would love to hear from somebody who has tried it. Any other thoughts appreciated as well.

Thanks
Bigal

Hi Al
good to see you here

No I had not heard of them before and from what I know about TS and dopamine and the multiple triggers and infinite differences between individuals who have the syndrome.....I am always very cautious about anyone or anything that claims to be THE permanent solution.
That is not to say that perhaps their system may not work for some....
but just be careful before you part with $$$$
If it seems to good to be true..........

Default Brain Balance Centers and Tourettes Syndrome?

I came across this recently and was intrigued, I see your post is a year old so I'm wondering if you tried Brain Balance Centers or not? And if you did, can you comment on whether or not it was effective or what your experience was like?

I have a 7 year old son with motor/vocal tics and we are probably going to be diagnosed with TS. I keep thinking back to a website that said "THERE IS NO CURE FOR TOURETTES" and that has kept me from trying BBC.

We do a modified diet and supplements, I am curious to know more about what other people try with success to lessen tics and co-morbid disorders such as anxiety, which seems to be a big trigger for tics.

Thanks,

Jan

Hi Jan

As a matter of fact, we just finished up the twelve week session about two weeks ago. My wife and I will meet with the woman in charge on Tuesday for her assessment and recommendations. I was going to post about this all after that. But since you asked, I'll post now. This will be long.

As of now, my son is ticcing as much as ever. And I am quite disappointed about that. But that doesn't mean that it won't help his tics going forward. I'll elaborate on that later. He has benefitted in other important ways.

The brain balance regimen includes blood testing for food sensitivities and nutritional deficiencies. They then provide (rather, you purchase) customized supplements.

The elimination diet and supplements routine was very hard. My son was found to be sensitive to dairy, eggs, soy, and more. He was also found to have a yeast overgrowth. Due to the yeast overgrowth, we needed to avoid sugar and starches in addition to dairy, soy and eggs.

We started with the elimination diet several weeks before we decided how to handle the yeast overgrowth. We did not see any benefits from the elimination diet, but then after attacking the yeast (a week of diflucan and no sugar and starches) we noticed that his stomach aches stopped. He used to get frequent severe stomach aches. So that was the first benefit.

My son had many warts growing on his hands. Including one huge cluster on his pinky. We had been fruitlessly fighting them in various ways. My wife finally decided to take him to a dermatologist. She made the appointment at about the same time we started the diet. Two months later, when they went to the dermatologist, my wife found that the warts were pretty much all gone. We hadn't even noticed, because we weren't really paying attention to them anymore. The dermatologist hypothesized that his immune system had improved due to the nutritional routine.

My son is a very good athlete. It seems that Brain Balance has helped with his coordination, as they said it might. Keep in mind that he was already very well coordinated. He competes in several sports. It seems that he recently improved in every one of them. Not by leaps and bounds, but noticeably. For a competitive child, this is nice benefit.

Most importantly, his school works seems to have improved (I'd like his teacher's thoughts on this, but she hasn't replied to my emails yet). He generally got good grades, many A's. But there were some tasks, most notably creative writing, that were very hard for him. When faced with these tasks, he would get very anxious. The teacher would have to give him quite a bit of extra help and we would have to help him at home. It would often be quite difficult because when his anxiety is up he digs his heels in and can get very uncooperative.

Well he just completed two creative writing assignments with no incidents at all. I know that we did not help him at home and according to him he got no help from teacher. So it appears that he did them independently and without incident. And he did well with them. He has also gotten 100% on his two most recent tests.

Now it's only been two weeks since we completed the program and these improvements may be coincidental. Or maybe, I'm looking for benefits to justify the investment (substantial time and money). But I can say for sure that the warts are gone and he isn't complaining about stomach aches.

Of course you could do the nutritional routine without doing brain balance. FWIW, I did find it helpful to have the guidance of their nutritionists.

After you complete the program, they do an assessment that is the same as the initial assessment that they give you before you start. We'll be meeting with them on Tuesday. I expect that they'll recommend another session, or at least a partial session. I'm not sure what we'll do. I'm not sure how we'd pay for another session. Also, it's now soccer and baseball season. So I don't think we could fit in. We may just send him back to the Chiropractic Neurologist that he went to prior to Brain Balance. You may want to look into that. Brain Balance is an outgrowth of the field of Chiropractic Neurology.

Lastly, it is still possible that Brain Balance will still help his tics. At brain balance, they liken the effects to taking a turkey out of the oven. The turkey still cooks for awhile.

In summary, at this point my son is ticcing as much as ever. And we are very disappointed about that. Perhaps it will still help his tics though. And we may end up doing more work. My son is pretty motivated. In any event, while I disappointed, I'm not sorry that we did it. He has benefited in other ways. And of course, the improved school performance is very important.

I'd be glad to answer any specific questions that you might have.

Best
Bigal

Al
it just seems to be a lot of money paid out to basically get nutritional testing (which can be done through any good Integrative physician) and one does not have to use "customized" supplements imho
I guess the point I am making is that we helped my son's tics enormously, with immediate results, with otc supplements, dietary & environmental modifications and it did not cost mega bucks to do so!

I do hope you see results as it seems a shame that the tics are not even slightly improved.

Of course, with TS, one realizes there will likely not be 100% tic reduction...but we certainly saw a dramatic improvement after just a few weeks of basic modifications, most researched free of charge online and using our physician for guidance.

Hi Chemar

I hear what you are saying. You may be right.

His school work has really improved though. His teacher is impressed by the progress he has made in the last three months. Tasks that used to cause a lot of anxiety are now handled without incident.

Now it's only been a brief period of time, but I'm hoping those improvements last. If so, then while I'm disappointed that the tics haven't lessened, I don't feel that the $ was wasted.

I think the improvement in school work may be due to the nutritional improvement...ie that he is getting things he may have been deficient in.

Better concentration and less anxiety etc is something we, and others, have noticed once the right supplements/diet are used.

So yes, I agree it is worth it to have this result. My point was more that one can achieve it without having to go to a specialized center and exclusively use their products. I guess I am just a tad cynical when there are big $$$ figures attached to treatments like this.

But that said, having improvements is priceless and we all know we would give our last dime to help our kids!

Yeah, it's so hard to figure out cause and effect. I was giving credit to BB for the academic improvement and the improvement in his sports. But who knows, maybe it is nutrition.

FWIW, I can say one thing for certain. The people at BB are not snake oil salesman, as I've seen them depicted on certain neurological message boards. At least at my franchise, they are extremely caring people who are trying to help kids who are struggling. There are many people convinced that they helped their children.

Default brain-stimulation-eases-tourette-tics

We have been trying something similar to BB through *admin edit*, working wonders. And this info may be helpful to you as well, we are just beginning our research and meeting with experts in the field before we pursue, magnetic resonance technology - many terms and techniques are popping up - including transmagnetic stimulation, rTMS, Transcranial magnetic stimulation, anyway - a specific organization in California - healed our neighbor in just a few treatments who suffered from PTSD, they are also making huge strides in treating autism, tourette, adhd, etc, this technology seems to rapidly calm the nervous system and help it recalibrate and heal the proper pathways. I found their vimeo videos most informative. ** But like all treatments, research completely and confer with your neurologist before taking any action.

This article in psychcentral about this non-invasive magnetic resonance treatment might be interesting to you;
