yup!
lunar stuff. I have mentioned before that my son has always shown waxing of his TS tics as well as his OCD at and around full moon. It was something I picked up on a while back but never mentioned to him, for concern over auto-suggestion, but my son is now almost 18 and he has noticed it clearly for himself. So what is it? what about the cycle of the moon affects the earth so, and, possibly humans too? I know scientists have learned probably all their is to know re the lunar effect on the tides and crops etc but...what about humans and animals I've read theories on fluid in cells/organs/body being influenced as are the tides, and some of it does make some sense to me............but still, hmmm my son is showing another waxing of some motor tics with this current full moon and him commenting how the Sept/Oct Fall time always being a bit more noticeable to him since he has been aware of this for himself. Harvest moons. sooooooo does anyone have any research? articles? personal or anecdotal experience of this tic, OCD or other neurological stuff waxing with the lunar cycle?

I have always shared the thoughts of law enforcement, and ERs.. that the full moon is problematic.
My husband even found me a Widget at Yahoo that shows the phases of the moon right on your desktop: Free http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/?se...olf&x=162&y=16 Now that I am not working...it is not so critical here, except to monitor ME! LOL I can't say with experience for Tourette's, but I do believe that the moon affects mood, and behavior. Actually the day before the full and the day after as well, IMO.. I know for myself, I sleep less during the full phase! I like the Widget... it is simple and elegant (and free). A quick look at a Farmer's almanac will also show you that in the past people used to plant and do other things according to the moon's phases. And of course the female menstrual cycle is the same length as the lunar phases, even if it does not directly coincide with them.

I've noticed Scotts tics and his vocalizations especially have escalated the past couple weeks. I wrote it off as him being excited about being in the play at school, but now i'm going to have to see what happens next full moon.

we are in moon wax tics up mode here right now too Vicky. Honestly if it werent for the vitamin/mineral shake he takes plus the extra magnesium from the magnesium citrate he drinks and the epsom salts tubs I think it would be bad for him now. he has a lot of head tics happening, those shaking etc ones and so getting his neck vertebrae out too thank goodness there for an excellent NUCCA trained chiropractor

Wow!!! I was reading this and it sort of rug a bell so I did a search on our full moons this year... and I can honestly say that these dates coincide with my son waxing tics. He has TS mild anyway {well... mostly} but once a month it intensifies but just for a day or two. The full moon in April coincides with when I really noticed something was wrong, it was during his 2nd soccer game for this season, that's how I remember the date. Also on the 18th July this yr {I see now it was full moon here} my son had pretty bad facial tics on the Fri {17th} and the Satuday... then went back to the usual mild ones about 5pm Saturday arvo.
Could there really be something in this? I know each day changes anyway but the only time he gets worse is around the full moon. ... now all we have to do is find a way of having an eclipse... I actually read on the Australian website that we're having a lunar eclipse on Aug 17th. Sorry for this ramble, but hey... I find this interesting. |

hi Lynee
yup the correlation is clear to us. we have kept a log for long enough now to be sure of it Luna in latin = moon and the words "lunatic" and "lunacy" derive from early folklore that people with mental illness cycled with the moon. now that we are beginning to understand more about neurological illness these terms may well have a more relevant meaning rather than the slur they have come to portray.

Harvest Moon is always one of the hardest times for my son. He ensures that during month of october he is especially diligent about his supplements and keeping diet/environment as free of potential tic triggers as possible
interesting informal survey results of tic triggers http://www.latitudes.org/articles/finding_triggers.htm Quote:
