I just got home from Brain Injury Support Group. We have some participants who have suffered devastating brain injuries.
One delightful woman was in a motorcycle wreck three years ago. She suffered a brain injury then had a stroke while recovering. She has serious struggles with speech, as do many in this group. Her improvement over the past two months is remarkable.
Something that I noticed is quite simple. She does much better when she is relaxed and has freedom to comment at her own pace. When she is on the spot as in when she is answering someone's question, she will likely stumble.
We discussed the value of living a low stress lifestyle. Those with some experience since their injury are in total agreement. Many of the participants were highly accomplished before their injury. Their overwhelming agreement with trying to live a simpler lifestyle was encouraging to the newbies.
The simple joys they could share with the others was encouraging. Many volunteer with school children or the hospitalized population. Their ability to recognize small triumphs is an extraordinary skill.
