I'm exhausted after driving even a short distance (5-10 miles) Is this normal? Is it just something I have to get used to doing again?

Driving gave me terrible headaches for months. I could drive in town (slow speed, short distances), but anything bigger triggered really bad headaches. I've just been able to be independent for driving for a few weeks now since completing vision therapy and starting amitriptyline.

For about 2 months are so driving gave me headaches and also cause me to become dizzy. It was so overstimlating. I'm in my 4th month of recovery. At the begining everything made me tired. When you get tired go to sleep if you need to. Give your body rest when it needs it. hope you feel better soon.

I get terribly exhausted and nauseous riding in cars (without driving) which is new, since my head injury. I think it's just so much information to perceive for my brain. I feel like the problem is that I'm not processing the information about car movements and outside world stuff fast enough for me to adjust my body movements to account for acceleration and turns. On longer car rides, I try to be very mindful of how I position my body so that it stays stable and I try to sleep the whole time. I can't imagine driving right now.

I would try to "rest" whenever in the car until recently. I still shut my eyes if its going to be more than 20 mins in the car as a passenger...and I don't drive more than 20 mins on my own.
I don't listen to the radio...and try not to talk to the kids in the car. I feel confident driving...no problems whatsoever...just my head gets tingly...just like when I'm on computer or watching tv. I guess its just ...add a few mins each day ...like the neurologist says. |

I did not drive much for the first 2 mos....even being a passenger was difficult due to nausea and dizziness. Around the 3rd month I started driving but had to keep it to short distances, no music, try (lol) to have my kids stay quiet, etc. By the 6th month I actually took a 3 hr road trip and did all of the driving, it was very encouraging!
Now if my pcs symptoms are in high gear I try to limit my driving to the necessities....all part of this new way of living with pcs! |

thanks Nolefan -- I sent you a private message.
I am trying a short drive everyday -- adding a quick store here and there. I wish I had a few hours a day that were symptom free!! I never know what's too much until about an HOUR after whatever I did. I'm learning to read at night -- that tires me out and I seem to sleep a little better. But the car thing...my head just feels so weird. tingly at the top...etc. I have no cognitive problems...just weird feelings. |
