Default Hello - hopefully i can help

Hi everyone
I'v been a lurker on these forums for some time now; searching endlessly for a quick fix for my pcs. It's time to join up as a member.

July 23, 2012 I was in a car accident that caused me to bang my left side of my head on the window of my car leaving me with a concussion. Even though i still have persisting symptoms there was no loss of concsiousness and mri came out clean. 11 days later on the Fourth of July a cop unlawfully arrested me (mistook me for someone robbing cars) and demonstrated police brutality by slamming my head onto the hood of his car. My concussion went from being bad to unbearable. I started having way more symptoms but the one that stuck out the most was the tension migraines.

I could easily sue the living s**t out of the police department, but i don't want to ruin anyone career/life. The police force thought i was, "faking it" and wouldn't bring me to the hospital. When they found the real thief they instantly released me and brought me to the hospital. It was a very messed up situation. . Wish i could remember more of it however.

Basically, i tried taking it easy as much as i could but its been pretty hard. My dad is a real big tough guy and forces me to do manual labor as much as he can. As far as he is concerned I'm faking all my concussion symptoms so i don't have to work. Its pretty ridiculous i could talk all day about it.

So now I'm being forced to work 6 hour manual labor days less than 2 months into pcs. Ive looked for every single quick fix under the sun and i really can't find too much except for one supplement: Magnesium. Magnesium is the only thing that has made these 6 hour work days possible.

Every day i take:
Magnesium taurate
Carnitine
Lions Mane
Multi Vitamin
C0q10
Fish oil - use to take super doses 10g a day during my first two weeks but now its only a gram or 2 a day

The second i started taking magnesium the tension migraines i suffered went away instantly. From what i have read magnesium and calcium have a see saw relationship in your brain. Calcium mediates the release of glutamate. When calcium is high magnesium is low and a over abundance of glutamate is released and this excess glutamate causes excito-toxictiy.

The extra release of glutamate usually isn't too much of a problem but when a person has a concussion theyre brain goes haywire and releases a cascade of glutamate damaging a considerable amount of neurons in the impact area. These damaged neurons try to heal and will do so. However when a persons brain is releasing more glutamate caused from an over abundance of calcium, excite-toxicity persists on neurons that are already damaged by major excito-toxicity, slowing down the healing process and causing many extra symptoms i.e. tension headaches. I would recommend Magnesium Taurate for the taurine in it also helps with glutamate excito-toxicity and as a added fun fact 90 percent of the us population does not consume enough magnesium.

It is great to hear you got relief from your head aches.

Many of us routinely promote magnesium supplements and suggest avoiding mag oxide. The lions mane does no have any specific value for mTBI. Carnitine may help with fat metabolism but is not necessarily needed for mTBI.

Also, many of us have had blood work done to determine if we have proper magnesium, calcium, D3, B-12, folate, hormones, etc.

Getting relief from head aches is worthwhile but for some there is no quick fix. Many have tried many different supplements and treatments.

btw, Suing a police department does not ruin anybody's career. They take it in stride and defend the city with malicious attacks on the plaintiff. Unless you have video to support your claim, they will lie to beat you.

Mark,

You pretty much took the words right out of my lawyers mouth. I have no video evidence so it'll be next to impossible to prove. The only person who saw the whole ordeal was my one drunk friend and he was arrested with me so they know he was drunk. His testimony won't be worth anything.

I did not know there was different types of magnesium supplements. Are they easily identified? Is there an issue with the mag oxide?

Interested in learning more.

Mag oxide is not well absorbed. It does work well as a laxative, though. I take magnesium malate.

Plastic, The cops decision to take you to the hospital makes it sound like they were accepting of the trauma they put you through. What do the ER records say?

Mark in Idaho,

I have been looking for answers to my brain fog for years now... what an unbearable condition to suffer for all this time.

Mine, I have come to find out, is sleep related as well.

Since I don't have the mental capacity to read through your posts to find what I'm looking for (I've tried really hard, I'm sorry ) I was wondering if you found something that works for you to treat the fog?

I am always in a fog and always fatigued. Life is unbearable. I can't sleep at night, and I've had everything done from bloodwork/hormone levels to sleep studies. I can't figure out why I can't get a good night's sleep.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Just curious to see if anything actually cured the fog. My life is going to hell fast. 5 years is too long for this bull.

Mark In Idaho,

Did you ever find something to deal with the brain fog? I apologize for asking, however I have been trying so hard to search through your posts but my mind isn't allowing it

I can't sleep at all. My fog is related to sleep, I know that for a fact. I have been tested for sleep apnea, hormones, etc. and everything checks out. I don't get it...

I usually feel better with no fog when I drink myself to sleep. Go figure. Just wondering if you found anything that helped you clear the fog and move out of the hell that this fog creates.

fog boy,

Welcome to NeuroTalk. I can understand your struggle to read through these posts, especially if you can not get enough sleep.

I have done two take home sleep studies and both said I was fine but my wife has observed me stop breathing while I sleep. She counted 16 breathing stoppages in one hour. Sleep studies are not always accurate.

Other than drinking, what else have you done to try to get some sleep?

What is your diet like? Do you take any nutritional supplements?

Are you taking any meds or have you?

Do you have an established sleep hygiene?

Do you finally fall asleep out of total exhaustion?

I have lots of things I have done and do to get to sleep. Once I know more specifics, I can suggest what may help.

My best to you.

Very valid point! Maybe this can help you in your fight. It is awful you got treated that way; there has got to be something, some kind of loophole!

I am glad you were able to get relief from your headaches too. Keep us posted, and is there any way to reason with your dad about the manual labor? (I know how it is, probably not, though, but worth a try if you feel it is setting your recovery back?)

Dolphin
I'm working on it with my dad he completely believes theres nothing wrong with me. Yet each day I'm getting pushed further and further back into my symptoms. I don't want to do this at all, but, i am about to fake getting knocked out. My sister said she would call my dad saying i bumped my head and I'm not waking up. She realizes the severity of my concussion because i actually talk to her every day; unlike my dad who just curses me for complaining about my head.

Mark
Thats a great analyzation. I'm going to have to talk to my lawyer about it.
