Default How long on elavil or amitriptyline?

Hi, everybody,

I am now 8 months post-concussion. I have been on elavil/amitriptyline for 3 months and it has definitely helped my headaches. I am back to work part time and continuing to feel better and better.

If you took elavil/amitriptyline, how long did you stay on it? Do I need to take it forever? When might it be reasonable to try going without it?

That's a question for your prescribing physician.

I was on Elavil for about 2 years but only 10 mg. Few times I tried to quit and had nasty symptoms like Sleep disturbance, Nausea. For me I don't even know why it was prescribed because I didn't had any sleep issues or headaches in the beginning.

One Neuro says it is not good and another says it is a good medicine. It sure worked for my IBS rather than any of my tbi symptoms (dizziness, fatigue etc.,)

Try to wean off very slowly if you plan to quit and it is tough for anyone to answer your questions (including doctors). It is all trial and error. If you quit and headaches comes back then you may have to continue.
