Default 7 months later

(sorry so long)
Let me give you ll a quick overview. I suffured two grade 3 concussions less then two months apart all due to sports. I think I have maybe had 4-5 concussion trhoughout my life. I took my 6 weeks to recover form my first grade 3 councussion. Then less the two months I recived another grade 3 and I have yet to recover 100% and I doubt I ever will.

Well I'm in 7 months and theses are the issues I still have:
Headaches
Migraines
Head puresure
Memory issues
Understanding and following intsuctions/ convo
Overstimlation at times
Issues forming sentences when I speck or write

I am so much beeten then what I was but it's 7 months and I'm not 100%
Have any of you had issues like this months after suffering with a concussion?
Also some days I feel more clear then others. The other day I went to Wal-Mart and I just felt so out of if. I felt so overstimlated and foggy. I had not felt that way in a long while. I started to wonder if it's in my head. I feel the same today. It felt like I was just a day or two out of getting a councussion
Last week when I was headache free for about two day I went and played basketball well I shot the ball and ran half a lap. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Anybody else have these isses

Also my mom says that I seem to get really confussed every few days when she talkes to me. She said I used to be confussed a lot more but now it happenes every few days or so. I fear I will never be back to 100% and sometimes I get so frustrated and upset that the people around me don'y understand.

Anyway I hope and wish that all of you who are suffering recover quickly. I pray you feel better in time.

Hey buddy. Don't feel bad, I'm almost at 6 months from my injury and I still have issues too. I don't get headaches, I have more mental and cognitive problems than anything. I'll have a few good days where I feel almost normal so I'll slowly start to get out of the house and do things (like go to Walmart or visit somebody) and then it seems like I get overstimulated and the mental and cognitive problems come back and linger for a few days. Besides from having some weird/horrible obsessive thoughts, I was feeling okay the last 2-3 days. I went to a doctor's appointment and to Walmart yesterday and went to get an MRI done today, took the dog for a walk and then about 10 minutes later I felt something "move" in my brain and suddenly got put under a cognitive brain fog again. It's a real uncomfortable feeling.

I honestly don't think you should be playing any sports or trying to live a "normal" life right now. If your still having these problems, your brain needs more time to heal.

Xoe,

Thats what maked PCS so hard to deal with sometimes. Somedays you feel almost normal and one day leads to two then three. It's at those times you dream of going back to work, playing with your friends ect...Then something happens and symptoms come back. It seems to be how it goes. I hope you have more pain free days and more play dates.

Things for your replies. I think the part that worries me is how am I going to handle working agian. I'm an out if work teacher and track coach due to budget cuts in my state. I also have NO clue if or when I will be able to complete my Masters degree. I just don't process info like I used to. Lol did you guys think i was a kid. I'm in my early 30's. I can admit writing skills have suffered.

Xoe22,

First off, you have been fed some very erroneous information. The six weeks recovery period is a falsehood. The grade 3 concussion has no bearing on recovery time either.

No matter what the doctors have prognosed, throw it all out of your mind. Your brain will heal as it feels fit.

It is appropriate that you have no clue when you will finish your Master's degree. I have an mTBI friend who has spent the past ten years working through his Bachelors degree and toward his Master's. He has another year to finish his Master's degree. And he works hard at it.

Studying and retaining information after a history of concussions is very problematic. It requires a completely different learning skill set that you used to get your Bachelor's degree pre-concussion. You are likely well into Multiple Concussion Syndrome. Your recovery after each successive concussion is much less complete.

At this point, I suggest you have two choices. Learn to reinvent yourself and pursue a less strenuous career or expect to spend a long arduous time completing your Master's. There is no way you can predict the outcome of the latter.

A short term option for you is humbling. Apply for Social Security Disability Income. The application process will be a great lesson in understanding your capabilities. The occupational psychologist will be able to give you some good ideas of your expected capabilities. Getting into the Disability Determination Service for your state will give you access to any support system available in your state.

The key issue you mentioned is this. You have good days and bad days with no rhyme or reason as to why you have each. This is common to PCS. There is no way to predict if this will ever change. For many of us, it is managed and tolerated, not overcome.

You need to accept the FACT that you need to stay off any athletic field or court. It is just too risky. There are plenty of concussions suffered on the basketball court.

Even thinking of trying a jump shot makes my head feel lousy. The jarring of a jog and the pounding as you try a lay-up and land back on the floor are too much for your head.

Being head ache free for two days means NOTHING. Being head ache free for two months is starting to show a trend.

You need to find a source of truth about managing Post Concussion Syndrome. You will look long and hard to find the truth with Sport Medicine specialists. Maybe one in a hundred or more truly understands concussions. The rest just think they do.

Don't trust an iMPACT test or other "return to play" testing system. They only give a false sense of security.

Have you watched the YouTube video series "You Look Great"? It is fabulous. Your friends and family all need to watch all 6 segments. The TBI Survival Guide at www.TBIGuide.com needs to be on hand to explain your condition to those who need to understand.

You mentioned that sometimes you wonder if this is all "just in your head." This is a very common thought. We all tend to doubt our condition from time to time. Maybe it is just wishful thinking. Then that mental wall comes and smashes us in the face and we realize, "No, this mental confusion is real and happening to me."

I hope you can accept this as a dose of current reality. Until you accept where you are, you can not get a foothold to move forward.

btw, Have you learned any coping skills or work-arounds to get through your day's tasks? There are many tips, tricks and techniques that help immensely.

My best to you.

Wow Mark what a great video that was. He put into words what I have been feeling. I am uninsured and I am not seeing my doc anymore. I can not afford the concussion center he wants to send me to. I have meds but I was not able to tolerate them well so I'm not on them anymore.
