This article almost made me sick to my stomach. Now i know that a guy with 4 concussions probably shouldnt still be playing a professional sport in the first place....but the fact that these Giants players were saying that they were specifically targeting Williams because they knew he had concussions and could ring him up and take him out. Its different if you were going after someone with a bad knee or a bad shoulder......but a concussed brain?!?! Second Impact Syndrome could kill this guy or cause serious disability! I just got in a facebook fight with a bunch of guys trying to make excuses for their comments. And yes, i am a Patriots fan so the guys arguing with me are all Giants fans......but this is just plain stupid to admit to the media you are targeting someone with multiple concussions.
Also on a side note.....CNN is having a special this Sunday Jan 29th at 9pm on concussions in youth sports called "Big Hits, Broken Dreams" http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-sh...183400986.html

Suffered a TBI with PCS on April 25th 2011 from multiple blows to the head from falling, unconscious for 12 hours with no memory of event. Hit the back of my head, and above right eye. MRI and CT negative. Symptoms included constant headaches (migraine, pressure, tension, icepicks), dizziness, tinnitus, visual changes, photophobia, fatigue, "spacing out", word finding difficulties, depression, and emotional lability. Began Healing in November 2011 after starting acupuncture and Healing Touch (a nurturing energy therapy that promotes relaxation and pain relief). I went back to work in February 2012. Ive been symptom free since July 2012. Very happy, positive, energetic and working out every day, doing yoga, and living a normal life again! I also began taking Healing Touch classes in November 2011 and completed 5 Levels of Healing Touch Certificate Program that included a 1 year mentorship to become a Healing Touch International Practitioner in June 2013. I am so pleased to offer this wonderful healing therapy to my patients, friends, and clients. |

There are more comments on this issue in the thread "Strategic concussions in football."
Plenty of us are appalled at this behavior.

Somewhat controverially on this this forum, I would defend the Giants players in that I don't think they understand the seriousness of concussion. Most people don't know that PCS even exists, I certainly didn't before I got it, and then found on the internet that this has happened to other people too. Noone I know had ever heard of it before either.
So from their point of view they were just targeting this guy in the belief that they might cause him to be dizzy for a few hours and then fine - no big deal. The problem is with lack of education in sport and society, starting with the neurologists who should be up to date with the evidence and aren't - not with the Giants players. Maybe I am being over generous to them, and the increased levels of education and awareness of the dangers of concussion in American Football mean that they should have known better, but that's how it seems to me. One thing's for sure, that guy should not have been playing and should never play again.

It seems to be really hard for athletes who have had multiple concussions to quit while they're ahead. The problem seems to be that many have a few concussions and then feel a lot better once they "recover" after a few weeks or months, so they assume they can just carry on. Where are the doctors who will tell them, "you are now at significant risk if you continue playing, and I highly recommend that you retire while you can still have a highly functional and productive life?"
