Default Anyone watch the CNN/Dr. Gupta report? Thoughts?

I watched the Dr. Gupta report "Big hits, broken dreams" last night. Anyone else? your thoughts on it?

I did not show it to my son (the one with PCS) and may not. I do think it did some to shed some light on concussion and PCS, but left too many things out. I was rather disappointed in this amazing opportunity to raise awareness of the severity of mTBI.

A number of TV drama series have presented concussion dangers in the past month or two (Harry's Law, A Gifted Man, Law and Order). Dr Gupta's program likely contains the same information.

From the reviews available online, it does appear that much is left out of the CNN program. The use of athletic trainers for 'return to play' clearance gives a false sense of security. Even Micky Collins, Ph.D. states that the iMPACT system is not a good predictor of risk of further injury. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is leading the way with this issue.

Unfortunately, the macho, buck up and get back in the game, we need you, sort of attitude causes undue stress on the decisions of both athletes and coaches/trainers. Unless the athletes get scared enough to open up to coaches and trainers about 'dings,' the risk will remain.

Special teams (kick and punt returns) will always be dangerous due to the high closing speed of players. Corner kicks in soccer are just as dangerous.

The players are getting stronger physically while their brains remain just as fragile.
