Default Now...I can't drive:(

Just another thing added to the list of things I can't do anymore....DRIVING. I have an appointment today with a NUCCA specialist and I wanted to see my son, so I borrowed my mom's car....on the way to my mom's work she was driving and I was sitting in the passenger's seat. I became a space cadet from just being in the car....drove home and now I'm finished. I can't think straight at all...and I still gotta drive to the appointment, go see my son and pick her up from work later.

Why is it getting worse and worse? I drove with no problems before...every week that passes something new is added to the list and my threshold gets smaller and smaller.

Can someone please tell me what's going on with me!?

I'm not over-exaggerating. It started that day I posted about having the flu...the next day after I was done throwing up I felt awesome....and then the next 2 days after that got better and better. I was almost able to fully function....I even posted about how awesome I was feeling. Then, every day after that has gotten progressively worse...and now I'm worse than I've ever been. I used to be able to drive with no problems (at least to drop my mom off, to my appointment and to pick her up from work later in the day)...Now, I can't even handle being the passenger.

????????....Time for that MRI the neurologist requested?

Edit: My body has tremors now when I get overloaded and my tinnitus flares up to the max....it's literally screaming like a Piccolo Pete firework right now.

What happened: I was randomly assaulted from behind in June of 2011. I was knocked unconscious for an unknown amount of time (less than 30 minutes) and have no memory of the event. CT scan showed contusion and hematoma of the left frontal lobe. I spent 3 days in the hospital. Diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome in September 2011. Currently have Medicaid, Medicare and SSI.

Current symptoms: Brain fog, mild memory issues, problems with spontaneity, occasional spacing out, word finding difficulties, tinnitus in right ear and some other things that I can't explain.

Life after the brain injury: 4 years after the injury, I'm engaged to my beautiful girlfriend of 5 years, I'm the CEO of my own business, Notorious Labs, I've taught myself how to program complex games and apps which is a feat I never thought I'd accomplish and now live a semi-normal life with very mild PCS symptoms.

Slowly but surely regaining my life back.

Nick,

I have had days when I can drive and days when I can't. That up and down of the PCS roller coaster is not uncommon.

You were likely watching the traffic and other visual images too much when your mom was driving. There is a different processing going on when riding than when driving. I have to manage how I watch when riding shotgun. If traffic gets to chaotic or other things create a chaotic image, I have to focus away from that chaos. When I am driving, I need to avoid driving during these chaos times or I might need to pull to the side of the road and stop.

Just because you had an episode of anxiety while riding does not mean your driving is over, forever.

Just consider your anxiety condition before getting behind the wheel.

Are you scheduled to see the doctor again for a review of your meds? You really need some relief from your anxiety.

My best to you.

Quiet your brain and meditate. That's all I can offer for advice.

I don't wish this kind of suffering on anyone.

It's truly...truly...horrible what I, what we have to go through. I'll admit the anxiety is bad...but that's only half the battle. Anxiety wouldn't be this bad if the symptoms weren't so horrendous.

I see my psychiatrist on Monday for new medication. Be prepared to here me whine and moan about the start-up side-effects...hahahaha.

nwsmith,

That's something I was experiencing quite a bit in 2010/11, where I was driving and the visual stimulation was just too much for my brain to handle and I landed leaving the freeway for side streets just to be safe.

The Nortriptyline I'm currently one does a 'two-fer', in that it handles the headaches I'm dealing with and it does soothe my frustration and anxiety from having the many 'how, why, it has to be something else' questions and state of mind.

It is easier to find ways to keep your mind calm, be it yoga, mediation, classical or jazz music, or whatever you have that calms you.

BTW, It's still a little tough for me to handle the flurry of high speed traffic on the cities freeways, but I'm getting better little by little.

December 15, 2009: Major surgery due to diverticulitis. 6 weeks after surgery, dizziness, fog, cognitive difficulty, anxiety, some panic, lots of headache. These symptoms largely gone, but still cannot exercise above a very low threshold otherwise resulting in severe headache and cognitive fog. Same for overwhelming odors.

Meds: Nortriptyline and Naratriptan as needed to rid severe headaches (exertional migraines).
