As most of you know, I fell off a horse about 16 weeks ago, head first and got quite the concussion. I'm also a hobby farmer, a few laying hens and some goats, that sort of thing.
Anyhow, I have no idea what happened today, but I found myself lying outside the goat shed in the grass. No idea how long I'd been there or what happened that I got there. I sat up and looked around and all 3 goats were outside their fence grazing, all had halters on. (Obviously I had brought them out to graze.) Also my bandaging supplies were out, one of my goats has a cut on his leg that I've been wrapping. The dirty bandage was there and the goat had a clean one on, so obviously I did that. I don't know if I tripped and lost consciousness or if I bent over to adjust something and one of them bumped me or if I bent over, got dizzy and went down... I just don't know? I gathered up the goats, put them back inside the fence, gathered up all my supplies, came in the house and called my husband who made arrangements to come home. I checked my pupils, equal and reactive and sat down in my chair and waited for him to come home. I fell asleep in the chair since it took him almost an hour to get here (traffic was bad). I've checked all over for signs of bruises or bumps and can't find any, not even on my head. My hat was knocked off, I remember putting it back on. I don't remember any of the events leading up to this... the changing the bandage, heck, I don't even remember if I ate lunch or not, but there were some dirty dishes in the sink, so I'm assuming I did. I feel kinda beat up tonight though... my head hurts and I'm quite a bit dizzier than I have been. No idea how long I was out... I can only narrow down the time frame a bit... I posted on another forum around 2pm and I called my husband at 4pm and during that time I did the bandage change and fed the goats (their feeder was full and their water buckets were clean and full) and I took them out to graze... I don't have any neighbours that would've been able to see anything happen, so I guess I'll just never know. Didn't go to the ER, didn't figure there was any point... if I start vomiting or my pupils go nutty, then I'll go. I was a bit nauseous afterwards, but that passed. I'm hoping I haven't set myself back or done anymore damage. *sigh* I'm kinda hoping my blood pressure just dropped (I've always been on the low side and have been running even lower since my fall) and I went down. Frustrating... scary... Starr |

I'm not sure you'd have loss of memory with a simple blood pressure related loss of consciousness. Hopefully MArk will have more info.... I think (in my completely unknowing and unprofessional opinion) that you should call your doctor. This is fairly serious, and you need to be sure that this doesn't happen while you are driving a piece of equipment or your car!
Hopefully you are feeling a bit better today, and hopefully some of the regulars pop in with their more informed opinions!

When resting, symptoms are low. With exertion, I still suffer from fatigue, migraines, vision problems, problems thinking or reading, troubles sleeping, issues finding or getting words to my mouth when the headaches are bad, tinnitus, and thyroid issues which I think are due to the concussion. Seen one specialist, and now a few others through insurance review of my case. Hoping for further treatment. |

Thanks Camyam.
I'm feeling fine today, no obvious signs of trauma, no bruising, nothing. My head hurts, but that's true everyday. I'll heading to the allergist this morning, hopefully to get more info about my ongoing rash. I'm just feeling stupid today about what happened. So weird. Just a month to go until brain injury rehab clinic, I have written down what happened and will mention it to them when I go. Starr |

Just don't be too expectant of the clinic.... Basically what I got was meds to help manage the headaches and not much else. But it was nice to know someone understood what was going on with me. Glad to hear you are ok though...

Good point about expectations for the clinic. I will be disappointed if its only meds... I'm hoping it will be about rehab and coping strategies and stuff like that.
Oh and the rash mystery continues, I was negative to all the environmental allergens I was tested for this morning. (Trees, grass, horses, dogs, dust mites, etc.) Starr |

Starr, that must have been quite an experience. Hopefully Mark will have some more educated thoughts on this. For me, I started to wonder if you had a seizure of some sort?? I'd be concerned about driving too, if something could happen where you don't remember that much of your day and found yourself on the ground, driving or the like might not be safe. I'd call the Dr on that one if it were me.
Hope it was a one time thing. Maybe your activity level is more than it should be? I too have a small farm and it wasn't until I finally got help and limited my activity that I started to improve. I suspect I had an absent siezure in one of my stalls early on (I'm over 2 yrs out now). Best! |

So, yeah, my thoughts are ranging from low blood pressure to seizure to you got kicked and re-concussed.
I'm thinking you should call in to your doctor's office and see if they think you should be seen.

PattyZ,
Welcome to NeuroTalk. Starr's post is from 5 years ago. CT Scans have limited use with concussions. Unless there are serious indicators, they are not much help. They are most beneficial at 72 hours post injury for those who exhibit symptoms of a bleed or excessive fluid pressure. A brain bleed 2 months after the injury is extremely rare and not necessarily related to the concussion. How are you doing ? Have you suffered a concussion ? Can we help you ?
