Default Candy

Hello all,

I know this topic may seem extremely trivial compared to many of the daily problems that all of us face, but I have begun the slow and tedious process towards recovery and have so far been relatively happy with the results.

One thing that still gets to me though is artificial sugar. It's not that I'm unable to avoid sugar (I easily go weeks before giving into just a bite of something like ice cream or chocolate), but I recently wondered if there were any possible alternatives to curb my sweet cravings without hurting my recovery process.

*admin edit*Upon researching *admin edit*, I discovered that they do not add many of the traditional harmful (to us at least) ingredients found in most candies. These ingredients primarily being: No high fructose corn syrup, no artificial ingredients, no preservatives, no GMOs, etc.

Has anyone tried these with any success? I always end up with a headache a few hours after eating almost any artificial sugar and would love to give these candies a try if anyone has any positive feedback. If not, then perhaps I could become the guinea pig for all of us and try these to see what effects they have.

*admin edit*Again, I know this may seem trivial, but it could provide many of us with some sweet-tooth satisfaction when almost every product on the market right now seems necessary to avoid.

Stu

Apparently I'm not allowed to link to the website, but the product that I am referring to is called Unreal Candy. I guess you will have to Google it yourself to research what I am talking about.

This product contains substantial inulin to replace the sugars.
Inulin is a fiber and is spelled a bit like insulin...but they are
very different. Don't confuse the two names.

For some people, inulin is quite laxative. For this reason some people are not going to like it.

Another product that is low carb containing inulin is
Dreamfield's Pasta. Also very laxative.

I'm curious as to your statement about "almost every product being necessary to avoid"

You posted this on a TBI/PCS discussion forum but you haven't told us anything about your condition or symptoms; forgive my skepticism but this apprears to me that this could be a promotion for a product?

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition.

Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life.

I'm sorry that I didn't give full disclosure up front, but I can guarantee you that this isn't a product promotion. I'm actually a long-time lurker who only recently joined to be able to discuss this topic (you can probably tell that I am a lurker given that I knew the correct format to use for this thread).

I suffered a concussion last July and it was either my 2nd or 3rd concussion in the last year to that point (one of the instances is debatable as to whether it was a concussion or not). I had severe headaches which have only subsided now due to amitriptyline and I was forced to undergo a lumbar puncture to lower my CSF pressure.

I was hampered by a decrease in cognitive functioning but I have been able to almost entirely overcome that problem at this point. I also used to be very sensitive to loud noises, could not handle being in crowds for more than 15 or so minutes, etc. I've just learned to take it VERY easy when I become overwhelmed.

So again, as you can hopefully see, I'm not a promoter. I'm just looking for an alternative to sweets (candy primarily) and I had not seen this option discussed. Other than that it may be somewhat of a laxative, does anyone else see any negative repercussions that would possibly come from eating these products? I actually just tried half of one and it was pretty good. No headache yet either

Ugh, I wish there was an edit function lol. I forgot to mention that one of the biggest reasons I am asking about this product is because it can be found almost anywhere I believe (CVS, Publix, etc). I saw that Shark Tank episode about Ice Chips, but I don't believe there is a store that carries them near me unfortunately.

Fruit is generally on the list of sweet, if you want sweet, don't consume too much though, as diarrhea can occur, cause fruit also has fiber! ><

I also have a sweet tooth, and I have been baking a lot. So I give away what the kids don't eat!

I have found the Kind bars (nuts, dried fruit and some with chocolate) very satisfying. Also very dark, chocolate-almost medicinal. Again, all within moderation.

Good luck!
