Quiet rest and an exam by a vestibular specialist.

Brain/concertration exercises given to me by a neuro physio. It depends why your balance has gone. see an ENT specialist.

I am a 36 yr old female who has played football, as a hobby, for 13 yrs. In July 2012, during a game I was slammed to the floor by two angry guys who hit into me so hard that one of them broke their ribs.
This knocked me back onto hard ground leaving me unconscious. I awoke to chronic head and neck pain, sickness and the inability to see or balance.
The paramedics made me walk to the ambulance, instead of placing me on a spinal board, where I was taken to the ER. I was hospitalised with suspected brain hemorrhage for 1 week, then on complete bed rest for 1 month, in a wheelchair for 2 months.

I have been left with PCS, moderate constant head pain, little short term memory, no memory of the accident, balance and sight problems, depression and exhaustion.
The worst problem is collapsing regularly. This has finally been diagnosed as Hemiplegic Migraines , these cause my brain to regularly shut down when I am tired and I then feel the full effects of a stroke (without the bleed on the brain!!) of which the symptoms last 2-4 days.
I have had 6 CT's, 2 MRI's and am under 3 specialists.

I believe everyday is one more towards improvement. Mainly I believe in the power of acceptance not the weakness of complacency or resignation.

Default Thank You

Thank for responsesI will be starting cognitive after holidays....I think I got myself 100% strong for this challenge....I have noticed that some of my family is in denial or thinks I can just get better!

*Reality we know that does not happen in a TBI/PCS....So I try to steer clear because I get frustrated & agitated with people not listening to what I am saying or interrupt my thoughts while trying to talk*I only have a certain relative that this relates to and I hate the fact that their location is the closest to me out of all the family.

~I have been living with this for a year before finding out....Yes my behavior was OUT of CONTROL during that time~Now I have answers and direction to recognize my feelings or actions and learning how to deal with every complex symptom*

This family member is trying to be nice but it is more annoying then anything!

Today I get to go to psychologist for first time and I am ready!!!

Best wishes to all

Hi Mia, sounds like you are making good progress.

One of my symptioms that hasn't completely gone away (although it has improved) is occasional vertigo. Just being aware of it and what makes it happen (looking up or down too long, getting up too fast, etc.) allows me to make adjustments so that it's not overly problematic. I'm careful going up and down stairs, and use a cane outdoors going longer distances or on uneven surfaces. All brain injuries are different, so please let us know if specific interventions suggested by your psychologist are helpful. Is this a clinical neuropsychologist you are seeing?

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition.

Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life.

MiaVita,

I was most greatly helped post-injury (after 2 yrs PCS) with my own balance issues by a form of dance therapy, Nia:
NIA (pronounced NEE-ah) stands for "neuromuscular integrative action";
previously known in the early-1980s as "non-impact aerobics".

All the best to you in your recovery.

Thumbs up Wii Fit & Balance Therapy

Thank you for the responses

My regimen is to go to psychiatrist that holds MD that works with TBI,PCS,PTS(I said psychologist in earlier post)I am not taking the Ginkgo Biloba because it made a bad reaction with meds I was on.

~I have been eating healthy all home cooked meals that are nutritious.I had received blood labs and everything was good but, I still take B12,D,and eat superfruit acai berry supplements.I try to walk for 30 min a day outside or indoor track~TREADMILL is a NO!LoL

I have started some balance therapy exercises that the therapist taught me to do while at home. Some of the exercises I can do on the Wii fit, but I suppose to take easy After the holidays me and therapist will be going to indoor swimming pool for balance rehab.I still get mayofascial massage's after head balance exercises....HELP'S me out a LOT with Headaches.

I will be going to a nearby Medical University to do cognitive therapy.

Lightrail,

I have can relate with the vertigo as well when I walk I have to take slow steps, when I get up I have to move slow, while I do home balance exercises with walking involved I do in a hallway so I can put my hands out to walls if needed, and I don't drive after dark because I see blue tracers and all street lights have blue rings around them on top of all lights being so bright...They make my eyes flutter!

~Z~
I will have to ask about the dancing in future regimen.

Thank you for all support! I greatly appreciate it
