Confused Loud "bang" sensation inside brain?

My husband is now 3 weeks post-concussion. Over the last 2 days his balance has improved to the point that he can be active around the house, feeling like his old self, for several hours in the morning before he has to rest. The biggest issue now is strong leg cramps while lying down which resolve when he stands up. He has been reading and watching TV (no violent stuff). We saw his primary care Dr on Tuesday when was still pretty wobbly, using a cane and my shoulders for support. We're waiting for the lab results (CBC, vitamin deficiency, etc.) and see her again next week. Then, an hour ago something VERY strange happened: he was from resting in bed and starting to fall asleep when he experienced a sudden, loud "bang" inside his head. No effect on balance, vision or hearing, just an internal slam. He had taken 1,000 mg of aspirin an hour before the event to ease his leg cramps. Has anyone experienced this loud bang inside the brain? Advice and help please!

Second concussion in same place 6 years ago. Hospitalized 3 days at end of Dec. Symptoms are mild compared to what many of you are enduring. Vision OK, no significant headaches, using a walker for balance, sensitive to light and sound. He's depressed (no history of mood disorders until now). Seeing excellent primary care doc who has put him on probiotic/vitamin therapy. The new Neurologist is wonderful with lots of mTBI experience. Next steps are brain wave testing probably followed by vestibular therapy, plus a 24 hour EEG. I am deeply grateful to all of you for your help.

Is it a thumping or like a pulsating? Please describe what you mean by bang.

I had a thumping/pulsating in my ear which was from balance off and inflammation...

Has the doctor referred him to a neurologist? If is balance is off he might need therapy...

Hi MiaVita. He had no thumping or pulsating--just a very loud bang that came and went in less than a second. We're impatiently waiting for the neurologist appointment later this month--a wait of 3 weeks!

I have had that same event. It was like somebody slammed a door inside my head with a bit of lightening added to it. It has happened a few times over a couple decades. It has never repeated in a close time interval.

It can be scary but if there are no other symptoms like muscle weakness on one side or extreme head ache, I doubt there is any reason for concern. You may call his doctor to report this event just to get some confirmation.

My best to you both.
