I'm thinking of taking some vitamins. Maybe I'll start w/ b-12 methylcobalamin.

I'm not sure how far I need to take it. I eat healthy and get roughly 1hr of vigorous exercise a week, sometimes more, sometimes none.

I've met with countless doctors and not one has recommended a vitamin approach. Yet they are willing to prescribe amitriptyline, naproxen, cannabinoids, serc and countless other drugs.

Thanks for all the tips. I report back if I notice changes.

For me and many others, vitamins are a lifelong regimen because we do better while taking them. They help stabilize emotions and other things.

The concept is simple. If your brain has been injured, it is permanently compromised. So, we do what we can to reduce that compromise.

I've noticed very subtle pain/soreness around the heart today. It's quite minor and it's something I have experienced before. However, generally in the past I haven't noticed it as much. Is B12 known to cause this? It comes and goes and it's worse if I bend over at an odd angle. As I said, very minor, not painful, just soreness/tenderness.

I took two B12 at once this morning under the tongue (500mcg X2). Methylcobalamin

Otherwise I feel pretty good, one of my better days in the last 30 days. I'm not sure if I can attribute it to the b12, but I thought I'd mention it.

Hello all,
I'd like to suggest that ongoing discussions about Vitamins /Supplements regimen or questions about it be continued on the main TBI/PCS forum.

The link for a new thread there -
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/ne...newthread&f=92

Ongoing conversations, or off topic posts on a sticky thread tend to clutter it up and make it harder for members to find the main info that the title refers to.

Thank you

If you have a Vitamin or Supplement that was helpful for you, and you want to add it here, and how it helped, that would be great.

I have updated it with more current information on Nov. 8, 2014. mrsD has been a big help.

The injured brain needs to do two things, First, it needs to cleanse itself of the toxic remnants of the injury. Second, it needs to regain strength (heal) in the damaged areas. B vitamins are the most important. I suggest:

B-12 (500 to 1000 mcgs daily or more) Methylcobalamin, taken on an empty stomach or sublingually (let it dissolve under your tongue).
a B-50 complex, for all the other B's so you get a good balance of B's
a high potency multi-vitamin like GNC Mega Women/Men. Centrum and One a Day are too weak.
Niacin, 200 to 500 mgs
Some extra anti-oxidants, Vit C (500 to 1000 mgs) and Vit E 400 IU's
D3, plenty of this, 1000 to 5000 IU's
Omega 3 fish oil, with a proper balance of Omega 6 and 9
Calcium with magnesium, 500 mgs per day Magnesium needs to not be mag oxide. mag citrate is easy to find.

I also have added
Curcumin (pricy but worth it) 950 mgs daily This is a Turmeric extract
DHEA, 25 mgs , a hormone that helps the body balance the other hormones, If your skin gets oily try 1/2 of a 25 mgs tablet. I only take a half of a tablet.
a Costco High Energy Multipack (7 pieces) in place of the multi-vitamin

I have recently added:
Cayenne capsules
Resveratrol, it is supposed to help the Omega 3 fish oil work better
Garlic capsules for cholesterol

Good meat protein for the amino acids, pork is the best, especially for BCAA's (branched chain amino acids).

A good amino acid supplement including essential fatty acids and BCAA's (broken or branched chain amino acids).
Vegetarian diets are usually deficient in these so they need supplements.

No caffeine, alcohol, MSG, artificial sweeteners (aspartame, Nutrasweet, Equal, Splenda, sucralose), high fructose corn sweetener, and only moderate natural sugar. Some studies suggest a single serving of caffeine or alcohol per day is acceptable for those who tolerate it.

We should also avoid aluminum compounds. The most common aluminum is found in antiperspirants (aluminum chlorhydrate) and many antacids. They should be avoided. Learn to read labels before putting it on or in your body.

My regimen based on the above costs about $1.30 to $1.50 per day including some non-brain supplements (arthritis).

I was started on the brain basics by a psychiatrist 30 years ago as a way to treat PCS depression and avoid medication. It was very effective. I was put on paroxetine years ago and have replaced it with 5-HTP and L-Tryptophan. 100mgs of 5-HTP in the AM and 100 mgs of L-Tryptophan later in the day. The L-Tryptophan will convert to 5-HTP as my body needs it.

The B-12 and the folic acid in the B-50 is important for repair of the myelin sheath that protects axon and dendrite fibers. The rest are for improving brain metabolism.

This regimen needs to be a long term or lifetime discipline. It take 4 to 8 weeks to see improvements.

After using the regimen for a month or so, it is good to get a blood test for the D3, B-12 and folate to make sure your blood levels are adequate. B-12 should be about 1000 pcgs/mL and folate at about 20 or higher.

This is a once daily regimen. I would have stated otherwise if that was the case. Note it is a B-50 complex, not a B Complex. Big difference.

Hello All,

Looking for help with my current supplement regimen. Feel free to weigh in on my supplements, dosages, etc.

I cannot swallow large capsules so I either open up the capsule and pour into almond milk or a smoothie or I try and find powder or liquid supplements.

Taking these every morning with my smoothie:

B-12: 500 to 1000 mcg daily (Twinlab vegetarian formula, sublingual, bottle doesn't say what form)

D3: 2000 to 5000 iu liquid

Omega-3's:
ALA 4000 mg cold-pressed chia oil
DHA/EPA 500mg algal oil (plant-based from marine algae, which is what fish eat to get Omega-3).

B-50 I've been using Whole Foods brand "B Daily Essentials" containing:
B1 50mg
B2 50mg
B3 55mg
B5 100mg (as d-calcium pantothenate)
B6 50mg
Folic Acid 400mcg
B12 50mg
B7 300mcg
Choline Bitartrate 50mg
Inositol 50mg
PABA 50mg

Probiotics (for digestive issues)

L-Glutamine @2000mg (also digestive)

Protein Powder: PlantFusion plant-based blend with BCAA's and enzymes

Chia (milled ground chia seeds) for fiber

CoQ10

Sometimes I add some Vit C but even the buffered stuff seems to give me stomach problems.

That's my basic morning regimen.

Later in the day I've been taking a multi-vitamin with minerals.

If my headache pain is unbearable I have to take Percocet to get through the day.

At night I take @175mg of magnesium citrate (I take the minerals and magnesium seperate from morning regimen and meds because I read that these can cause other supplements and meds not to absorb properly).

Any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks!
