Folic acid is inactive in the body. It has to be activated--methylated-- to work.
The cancer concern can be Googled... at first it revolved around young women who were given very high dose, for pregnancy... some of them developed colon cancer. But it is thought that the folate only "feeds" a cancer that is already started. Many other nutrients do this. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/271601.php You are not going to find any B-complex that does not include folic acid. Folic acid is in many US foods as well. Fortification does not extend to every other country however.
