Quick Question:
Recap: First concussion Septmeber 3rd, had all the standard PCS symptoms, no anxiety, recovered after 1.5 months. Second concussion received after a month and half after being symptom free. Had all standard PCS symptoms for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks i started getting high levels of anxiety and i am pretty sure i even had a panic attack. Over the three week period i took Xanax three times. Had an MRI and CT scan done. No longer taking anything. Since my anxiety and panic attack three weeks ago, i have been experiencing the following NEW symptoms that were never present in my previous recovery: Extreme leg weakness and uncomfortableness especially at night weird sensations in my entire body overall muscle fatigue poor circulation muscle twitching all over feeling of heartbeat in head Now, since Friday, i have been getting better sleep and my anxiety has been relatively low. I also have been much better with my Head fog and grogginess however i my legs are still extremely weak and anytime i rasie my heartrate, i can feel my heartbeat in my head. Why did i not experience this in my first concussion? If these new symptoms are caused by anxiety then will they go away as fast as they came?

are you taking any new medications or supplements? I know supplements are supposed to be all natural but they can cause allergic type reactions too. Fatigue, weakness and shakes and the like can be reactions to vitamins/supplements. I know I've had funny things happen after taking new supplements.
Any changes in your diet? I don't eat or drink dairy products and one time I was using soy milk in my shakes instead of almond milk and couldn't figure out why I ached all over. As soon as the soy milk was gone and I went back to almond milk the aches went away. I waited a couple months and tried it again and same thing happened. Organic/non gmo soy milk doesn't seem as bad but in general now I avoid soy milk. Anxiety can also cause a LOT of symptoms and hopefully once it's under control you will feel much better. Just some thoughts. CC

I'm a 39 year old, female, accountant. On July 2, 2012 I crashed my bike at the end of a 65KM road ride. I was fine that day but woke up the next morning to my current world. Ongoing symptoms include: dizziness, blurred vision, light and noise sensitivities, cognitive problems, uncontrollable emotions/depression/anxiety, headaches (but they're getting better), mental and physical fatigue, difficulty communicating and sleep disturbances. Currently seeing a fabulous Neuro Psychologist and vestibular physiotherapist and hoping to soon see a neuro ophthalmologist. I am currently doing 20 minute stationary bike rides daily, 20 minutes of meditating, 15 minutes of Lumosity and lots of resting. I have not been able to work or drive since the accident. The things that have helped me the most since the accident are vestibular therapy, gel eye drops (for blurred vision, sensitivity and dryness), amitriptyline (10mg), and meditating. I am finally starting to see some slight improvements and am hopeful! My brain WANTS to heal itself... I just have to let it and stop trying to get better! |

Thanks for the reply Cycle-
I am taking some suppliments and vitamins but they are all things that i taken before except for a B-complex which is called "positive thoughts" and it has some herbs in there. I also complelty quit drinking coffee / caffiene about three weeks ago. I used to drink a big cup of coffe every morning for the last 15 years. My legs are my biggest concern. Quote:

I would guess it could be a combination of caffeine withdrawal and whatever herbs are in your B-complex.
Anybody know how long caffeine withdrawal lasts? Perhaps you could try a different B-complex without the additional herbs and see if you still have the same results?

I like the points cycle crash made - all very valid. I've have found myself to be much more sensitive to anything since my concussions - new Meds, foods, smells, etc. Have you had any labs done? That might be a good place to start

Musiclover . PCS "survivor" - first concussion 10/2010 with PCS for nearly a year. Hit back of head on a shelf. Symptoms were head and neck pain, vertigo, nausea, lethargy, anxiety & depression. Experienced greatest amount of recovery between 9-12 months, with the following year being much, much better . 2nd concussion 12/2012 - hit front left forehead on wooden edge of couch. Currently dealing with a return of PCS symptoms including headache, nausea, vertigo, brain fog, and lethargy. . ~ just trying to take it one day at a time . ~ |

Sounds like anxiety to me, and this is coming from someone who suffered from anxiety BEFORE PCS. Anxiety can do a lot of weird things. Did you have any of those symptoms while taking xanax?

24 y/o female living in Portland, OR. One concussion in 2012 from rugby. Loss consciousness and took around 5 months to recover completely. Hit my head hard on a shelf on 12/7/14. Recovered by the end of February. A branch fell on my hardhat at work on 10/7. Not sure if completely concussed but have been feeling "out of it". Definitely injured my upper cervical region and upper back. Out of work for the time being. |

Some of those symptoms are similar to Xanax withdrawal symptoms, even if they are minor and you have only taken Xanax for a short amount of time.

Dear CW21,
Low magnesium and calcium may be the reason for the muscle twitches and pain. Often seen in people with diet change. In england we have a product you can buy from a good health shop that you rub into your legs thats called restless legs. It works it calms down muscle twitching. Maybe you can find similar.

I am a 36 yr old female who has played football, as a hobby, for 13 yrs. In July 2012, during a game I was slammed to the floor by two angry guys who hit into me so hard that one of them broke their ribs. This knocked me back onto hard ground leaving me unconscious. I awoke to chronic head and neck pain, sickness and the inability to see or balance. The paramedics made me walk to the ambulance, instead of placing me on a spinal board, where I was taken to the ER. I was hospitalised with suspected brain hemorrhage for 1 week, then on complete bed rest for 1 month, in a wheelchair for 2 months. I have been left with PCS, moderate constant head pain, little short term memory, no memory of the accident, balance and sight problems, depression and exhaustion. The worst problem is collapsing regularly. This has finally been diagnosed as Hemiplegic Migraines , these cause my brain to regularly shut down when I am tired and I then feel the full effects of a stroke (without the bleed on the brain!!) of which the symptoms last 2-4 days. I have had 6 CT's, 2 MRI's and am under 3 specialists. I believe everyday is one more towards improvement. Mainly I believe in the power of acceptance not the weakness of complacency or resignation. |

I take gabapentin to settle my legs down. As was said already, magnesium and calcium are also important.
