I suffered two concussions last year, but it never seemed to go away. After research on WebMD and other websites (before I found this one), I diagnosed myself with the syndrome. Do general doctors make these kinds of decisions? Or is it a self-evaluation like I did?

My experience is that you need to see a neurologist for proper testing and diagnosis.

Shez In March 2006, I had a partial left temporal lobectomy to remove my seizure focus. It worked well to control complex partial seizures, but left me hyper-sensitive to light and sound. Migraine headaches increased in severity as well as frequency. In March 2007, I slipped on the ice and fell upon the left side of my head. The effects were mild TBI, a moderate concussion. The TBI effects increased light and sound sensitivity further, as well as migraine headaches. Seizure disorder got shaken up, requiring new medications to control complex partial seizures. The long-term effects of these brain issues are very poor short-term memory; difficulty regulating emotions; major depression; anxiety; easily overwhelmed; word-finding difficulty as well as mixing up my words (but not recognizing my mistakes) and an extremely difficult time with decision-making. I also got divorced and am the secondary co-parent of our two daughters. That was a huge blow to me! |

Hi and welcome to NeuroTalk. PCS is problematic for doctors to diagnose medically since mTBI will often not show up on a CT or MRI. I agree with Shez, a neurologist would be best; I'd inquire whether they do a lot with work with mTBI patients, as there has been varying degrees of satisfaction from NT members in regards to diagnosis and treatment from neurologists.
Tell us a little bit more on which symptoms are presenting, and we can better support your question based on the collective experiences of the forum contributors. Meanwhile hopefully this link will be helpful. http://www.brainline.org/landing_pag...iagnosing.html Best to you.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition. Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life. Last edited by Lightrail11; 03-08-2013 at 12:37 PM. |

Hi,
I went undiagnosed for years. I was going to a pain specialist for years for chronic pain and migraine headaches. I kept mentioning these other problems and the fact that I had passed out and hit my head and have had at least 5 concussions before being in the MVA that disabled me totally. It was not until I went to a neurologist / movement disorder specialist that I got a full diagnosis. Yes I have chronic pain but it is presenting in my body in this way because of the traumatic brain injury / post concussive syndrome. I am in the middle of having neuropsychological testing done which should give me more information and help on what kind of treatment would be beneficial to me at this point. I also had an MRI recently which does show some problems. I understand that the MRI does not always show any problems. I would definately go to a neurologist. These are neurological symptoms that we have and that is the kind of specialist diagnoses the problem. Good luck. Hope you get feeling better soon. Brain

Other problems include REM sleep behavior disorder, nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy, chronic migraines associated with nausea/vertigo, episodes of passing out, hypoglycemia, liver dysfunction (had accidental overdose of acetaminophen in 2009) had liver and kidney failure, hernia, degenerative disc disease with compression of nerve root, PTSD, and other problems associated with functioning problems from traumatic brain injury (light, sound sensitive, easily overloaded, easily distracted, cannot focus, anxiety problems etc.) |
