Default neuro ophthalmologists in Bay area

My daughter started vestibular therapy and eye therapy. She has been nauseas for about a month now. Would it be better to stop these therapies and make sure from a neuro ophthalmologist that these therapies are what she needs?

What tests would the neuro op. run?

Any recommendations for a neuro op in the Bay Area?

Thanks

Default Therapies

When I started vision therapy, I stopped vestibular therapy, at my vestibular therapist's recommendation. She thought it would be too much for me, as there is some overlap. I would talk to her therapist about it.

Seeing a neuro-op would be a good idea. I'm not sure how you can start vision therapy without seeing one first. Mine ran a whole battery of tests, but it would take too long to go to detail, as my eyes are easily strained. It took about two hours. It did wear me out for the rest of the day, so just keep that in mind!

In my opinion, it's probably the vision therapy that is the culprit, but it could be the vestibular therapy. Has your daughter been evaluated for a possible neck injury in addition to her concussion? That can also cause nausea too.

Good luck!

I have recovered my cognitive function, and I've overcome severe vertigo through sensory integration therapy. Wellbutrin has helped me escape depression. I have recently had a few stress-related migraines, as well as headaches stemming from eye strain. I'm also dealing with tinnitus, lack of stamina, extreme light sensitivity, and eye pain. Diagnosed with 9 different vision issues: convergence insufficiency, pursuit eye movement deficit, egocentric visual midline shift, photophobia, visual information processing delays, accommodative insufficiency, saccadic eye movement deficit, lack of coordination, and central peripheral visual integration deficit.

*First concussion: October 2010. I was pregnant and got rear ended. I associated my mild PCS symptoms with baby brain and blamed my light sensitivity on allergies and dry eyes.
*Second concussion: December 2011. I hit my head on a wooden beam, saw stars but did not lose consciousness, and I had very disturbing PCS symptoms but didn't go to the doctor.
*Third concussion: August 2012. I caused a car accident as a result of PCS symptoms. Thankfully no one was injured but me. My husband confronted me, and I finally sought help and took medical leave from work. My symptoms worsened, and I developed severe vertigo.
*Fourth concussion: November 2012. I was riding in a car with a friend and we were hit head on by a driver who lost control of her car. I didn't have a big increase in PCS symptoms.

Default Too much

I am starting to wear Prism glasses and doing vision therapy and I feel really awful. I have nausea, dizziness, headaches and am more unbalanced than usually.

I am now trying to back off and do just one thing at a time. It is always really had to figure out what trigger things.

I went to the neuro opthamologist to get my diagnoses, I have post traumatic vision syndrome, vision mid line shift syndrome, convergence insufficiency, tracking issues and photophobia. This symptoms are not that uncommon with a tbi.

Good Luck.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's vision and vestibular issues.

I saw the Binocular Clinic at University of California, Berkeley Morgan Eye Center 510-642-2020. You can let them know your daughter had a mtbi and is trying to get her vision assessed.

Best of luck!

Hi Berkeleybrain..I've read some of your posts. Your symptoms are similar to my daughters. No one has ever given us a 3 -5 year timeline. Interesting. She is going super slow. I like all her doctors. We just spoke about a neuro op. today. Can I ask who you see? Berkeley is a distance but it would be nice to have a name just incase we need to go that next step.

Thanks

I will be seeing Dr. Liao at the Stanford Eye Institute. I've heard she's the best. But I've yet to see her. I will report back. She seems quite difficult to get an appointment. Have had to wait 2 months.

I see Dr. Pia Hoenig and her resident, Dr. Ryan Johnson, at the Binocular Clinic. She is one of the few doctors who has a good understanding of the impact of trauma on vision and on one's self.

They have been incredibly kind, honest and thorough.

I am fortunate that I can walk there, but if you are feeling frustrated, it might be worth the trek. They might also be able to refer you to other neuro ops in your area--as a first-rate training clinic, they have trained many ophthalmologists!

Best of luck to your daughter-she is lucky to have you advocate for her! YOu can always message me
