Default Concussion has been two weeks

Hi all,

I am very thankful I found this forum and I will be brief in my explanation.

My concussion occured almost 2 weeks ago tommorow. Without going into too many details, essentially I was walking alone late at night and a few people decided to beat the crap out of me, knocking me unconcious. I woke up in the hospital, not knowing what the hell went on. Please, no one talk about this with me, it does nothing but **** me off considering this was unprovoked.

Before the concussion, I worked out 5-6 times a week (weightlifting or basketball) and was healthy. I was in the hospital for 2 and a half days, and they said my face was healing remarkably and I was healing very fast and they let me go. I'm 24 years old.

Since then, where I was sleeping on average 18 hrs a day and barely eating, I have improved tons, but I still feel 'off'. I dont feel like myself, I get tired easily, and I frequently have afternoon naps (I sleep about 10 hrs a day). I have slowly improved each day, but as I said, I do not feel like myself. I feel slightly 'dumber', and slow to react. It also feels like my equiibrium is off.

I just want to know what my expectations should be for feeling great again? This is a very depressing time in my life, and wihle I am not as bad as some posts I've read (I am not super fatigured each day or have massive headaches) I want to get better and improve. Can a few of you kind folks help to reassure me and get me in the right direction to health? Its just pathetic how after the weekend I was attacked, I was interviewing for a career job and now that is down the tube.

Willgetbetter,

Welcome to NeuroTalk. Sorry to hear of your assault and injury. We have had quite a few on NT who have been assaulted randomly. In some parts of the country, it is called the "Knockout Game."

You need to read the sticky at the top titled Vitamins. It has all the basic start up information.

You may benefit from a Victims Assistance program if your state has one.

Over time, things will get better. Doctors are not usually much help. Learning to take proper care of our brains is the best way to go. Learning to reduce stress in our lives can make a big difference. You may also need to focus on care for your upper neck. Hits to the upper neck can cause inflammation that can make concussion symptoms much worse. Icing it can help.

Please tell us more about your struggles and symptoms. Hopefully, we can help you minimize your symptoms so you can give your brain a chance to heal.

My best to you.

Thanks for the response. I've read some posts on here and what some of you are dealing with, I have to top my hat off to you. Some of the symptoms and things I have read enough would be enough to make someone quit life.

With symptoms, its been 2 weeks, and it feels like everyday is a teeny weenie bit better, but i still just simply do not feel like myself. My brain feels foggy, I cannot concentrate for more than 10 seconds, and a wave of dizziness might com over me for 2-3 seconds every once in a while. It seems like I have a constant minor headache;but the big thing is simply NOT feeling like myself.

I basically do nothing all day. Read and watch TV and sleep in hopes of improving but it is very very slow.

I know life is boring at the minute, but resting/sleeping is really important in order for you to heal. You are feeling better because you have been resting and your brain is recovering.

In order to assist further recovery, I would even say avoid TV, Computer, Video Gaming, Phone, Reading because this is stimulating the brain whilst it is trying to recover.

Another thing is not to return to sport until your symptoms have all gone, start with gentle walking and then gradually increase activity.

I found massage and reflexology helpful for my recovery.

The best of luck to you, relax and everything will fall back into place eventually.

Hi I really feel for you, it must of a terrifying time. I can assure you that the symptoms you are experiencing are quite normal, if not scary. The same happens to me, just as you say.
It's important to rest As much as you can it will really make the difference and this means brain rest. No tv no computer etc.

It will improve but it will take time. Mine took about a year so it's slow going but we all heal differently.
Get as much help and support from friends and family if you can.
I wish you well, this is a good forum and you will get good advise from others
More experienced than me xx

Also try to reduce any form of stress in your life.
Easier said than done eh ?

\thanks for the advice guys. I have stopped working and i am committted to essentially resting my head and not going crazy with anything. I will take everything you guys say into account and treat myself well. I have already been taking fish oil, d3,b6 daily, so I think this will help. One more question: how long, on average, before you guys felt close to 100%? Do you ever feel your mind "bigs up" your symptoms and makes them bigger than they actually are?

I am still not 100% and I am 8 months on, but I am nearly there apart from fatigue. There is no reason why you will not be better long before this, we all heal differently.

Hi I started to notice a slight improvement at 3 months then very slowly from then.
Things seemed to get better. It was like 2 steps forward and 1 back, if you see what I mean.

One year on am nearly there. Although just recently hit my head again.
So taking lots of rest.
Just keep positive and things will get better.

Take care

Hi, Welcome, and Sorry about your strife.

At your age, you may eventually approach closer to 100 % better than some others of us, dependent on your multiples of impact injuries/concussive injuries.

But, 100%? I don't know that there will be a true 100% recovery for everyone, or anyone trully.... our brain's re-wiring attempts from the injuries can only do so much from the varied injuries, and time will tell.

However, we all can get to our new us as best we can with all our best efforts.

Keep up with the Vitamins/Supplements, Therapies as you can get them/need them, try to move forward more than allowing to be dragged backward, keep positive, Vent here as the need arises - we all do - we're good for each other, we listen more than the docs do.

Best wishes.................
