My friend recently had a concussion (last Thursday night) for which she did not receive any kind of medical treatment. She has been experiencing symptoms since.
Today her mother forced her to go to her scheduled dental surgery to have her wisdom teeth removed (she would not call in to cancel the surgery). Her surgeon thought that she was just lying to try to get out of going through with the operation, and he put her under anesthetic for the operation. She's out now and was texting me, describing some usual post-anesthesia effects, but now she's stopped responding and I'm getting worried. Should I be? What is the best thing to do now? |

Hi and welcome.
While I think the surgery was too soon what’s done is done. I'd give her a day or two to get over the surgery and effects of the anesthesia. If she is close by give her a call then go by to see her in person. The concussion was only a few days ago, it’s too soon to assess whether she will have any residual PCS symptoms. Most concussions resolve without lingering symptoms. What symptoms was she presenting prior to the surgery?

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition. Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life. |
