Default I Just Finished My First Class Back in College

So I just finished my first class since my M.D.s made me get out 9month's ago.I had ADA help for extra time.I do not know how I did yet.I go to school online, I found myself with cognitive strain, overstimulation that makes everything flair up.So after I have to sit in dark quiet room and meditate to get symptoms to calm down. There is a lot of pain but I guess no pain no gain! I will keep you all posted when I get my grade.

[SIZE="1"]What happened. I was in a car accident 2-23-2013, and got a mild concussion from it. I had some time off for brain rest, got somewhat better, but slipped into PCS in March 2013.

Symptoms I had: dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, fatigue, tinitis, occasional headaches and migraines,

Symptoms as of 5--2013: poor sleep, tinitis, some confusion /short term memory blanks, balance. The other symptoms are mostly gone, but flare up if I OVERdo something.

Therapy I had: vestibular

3 months in: I could drive more and for longer distances. I felt like a younger, happier version of myself and I feel so blessed to have this feeling.

9 months in and I am working full time. I do get tired, and some sound and light sensitivity from time to time, but mostly I am over most of my symptoms.
I pray every day and I m praying for your recovery.

Over a year in: I can multi task (limited) and have humor in my life. But when I am tired, I am very tired.

Default Thanks Guy's

I am taking a week off in between my classes.I am going to see psychiatrist Monday because, I am wondering if stimulants would help with my Executive function and all my other cognitive impairments?Does anyone have any feedback on pro's and con's from experience?I would greatly appreciate it.

Arrow Finished Another Class!

I have finished my second class since I have been back to college and I landed a C this time. I did it without any stimulants because the psychiatrist will not prescribe for me. I am happy I am passing for all the pain that I have to go threw doing my own cognitive therapy to do this college work.

September 16, 2011 my son collapsed on the football field due to a subdural hematoma. He was life flighted to the hospital where they did emergency surgery. At first the DR said that he thought everything would be fine. Then his brain started swelling three days later, he had midline shift to the right side cavity and then the brain herniated onto the brain stem. They did not think he would make it. They stabilized until family could come. After family got there, he began to stabilize. We were counseled to "let him go" because the brain damage would be extensive. We chose life. He was in a coma for 48 days and then a vegetative state for another 58 days. He was considered semi-conscious Jan. 5, 2012. It is now July 2013. He has no short term memory, still is now walking with a walker, and has issues with expressive language, and is incontinent.

Congratulations Mia!

It feels good huh? I returned to massage school 8 months post injury. I was able to graduate a year later with ADA assistance in-classroom. I'm so impressed you can do online classes! That's just awesome.

It seemed the classes where I had previous knowledge were easier since it was already in my long term memory. Do you notice the same? Learning and memorization was a challenge with new information (muscle attachment sites...ugh), but creating flashcards helped. Cognitive brain drain happened often and I bet working online adds it's own level of difficulty with eye strain.

Be careful with the "no pain, no gain" thought - pain lets us know when to set a boundary in tbi. I know because I didn't do this at first which increased my symptoms and made it harder to learn and set me back a bit. I don't want anybody making my same mistake. Be gentle with yourself and don't hesitate to ask for any/all school resources. Attitude and perseverance are your best tools. Cheers!!!

I'm going to post some things I learned when going back to school to help other students - hopefully later today. Simple things tripped me up in tests that took awhile for the teachers to figure out - graphics like model of the brain was flipped visually on the exam and I failed labeling it because it differed from our book - my brain didn't like the direction change and totally blanked during the exam. I was so embarrassed! Things like that are so simple, but to an injured brain it can make the difference in passing or failing an exam.

Congrats again!!
