Have you had any kind of brain scan to confirm that no mild brain trauma has occurred?

Hi Ed
You are 10 months in and I am 8 months in, but that said, there is no way to know when you are all better. I don't know why I am getting some symptoms again, but somewhere I over did it and that happens. So, I need to figure out I over did and then brain rest and listen to my symptoms. They are sending me a message. Are you able to rest if you are working? Have you noticed any improvments? Brain healing is just plain slow. Here's wishing you some peace. pm

[SIZE="1"]What happened. I was in a car accident 2-23-2013, and got a mild concussion from it. I had some time off for brain rest, got somewhat better, but slipped into PCS in March 2013. Symptoms I had: dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, fatigue, tinitis, occasional headaches and migraines, Symptoms as of 5--2013: poor sleep, tinitis, some confusion /short term memory blanks, balance. The other symptoms are mostly gone, but flare up if I OVERdo something. Therapy I had: vestibular 3 months in: I could drive more and for longer distances. I felt like a younger, happier version of myself and I feel so blessed to have this feeling. 9 months in and I am working full time. I do get tired, and some sound and light sensitivity from time to time, but mostly I am over most of my symptoms. I pray every day and I m praying for your recovery. Over a year in: I can multi task (limited) and have humor in my life. But when I am tired, I am very tired. |

It does not mean anything when a normal MRI, CT and EEG shows no damage. The damage is to fine (microscopic) to be imaged by these system. It is a widely know fact that neuros rarely recognize an injury that they can not image or diagnose with a cursory neurological exam.
If you had access to a 6 or 7 Tesla MRI or a high end Diffusion Tensored MRI, there might be some damage visible. But then, even these imaging systems may not pick-up the microscopic damage. Your diagnosis of "nothing wrong" just means there is nothing wrong that they can see so they can try to treat it. A qEEG may show some waveform imbalances but a qEEG would not likely lead to a successful treatment regimen. What is your desk job and what is your desk job environment like ? Sounds, voices, visual stimuli, What is your household environment like ? These all can make a difference. For some of us, our injury is permanent with symptoms that will persist in a roller coaster pattern. I've lived with this condition for 13 plus years.

I know it feels like forever, but you might just need more time and help.
I am at 13 months and I didn't see much improvement til the one year mark. Up until the one year mark I had seen a bit of improvement but felt that my quality of life was low. I also remember in the beginning when mark from Idaho would talk about work arounds, I didn't want to learn work arounds, I wanted my old life back. Well my old life isn't coming back. I depend on my earplugs, prism glasses, sun glasses, breaks... The more you can do to keep your symptoms in check, the better. Lots of great advice on this board. Su Seb

Unfortunately nothing you are asking sounds unusual to me. Yes if you were severely concussed, brain damage is possible. Keep in mind that there is a huge spectrum of damage (minor to major) and that neurologists know very little about it really. My neurologist is German degreed and has also studied at Johns Hopkins and freely admits to how little they know. Physical exertion elevates my symptoms as well. Find a doctor who knows about PCS, not that many do. I had a concussion 24 months ago. I'm 57. I had several as a kid playing sports and recovered quickly (within 24 hours) each time. Not this time. I was out of work for 10 months, but have been back to work for a year. My headaches have never stopped and by that I mean 24/7/365 for two years. Still have occasional light and motion sensitivity and some inconsistent cognitive impairment. I'd say I'm 90-95% back to normal and I'm starting to think this is as good as it is going to be. But still, I'm much better off than I was during the first year and better still than the second year. Time is a great healer. Patience is difficult. Hang in there.

Not to scare you, but some of us on here have endured some serious time factors. I have fought TBI symptoms for 37 years. There are other members who have even longer histories. I also know the "roller coaster".
Severe fatigue, body constantly hurts, migraine headaches, psych problems. My TBI is no longer just a medical condition for me...it is a way of life. Can it clear up on its own some day? Sure, maybe. But I am prepared to face the daunting possibility that I will be like this for the rest of my life. For me, answering the question "Why?" no longer remains in the domain of medical physiology. It is a much broader question now, and I don't pretend to know all the answers. Best of luck to you, and including you in my prayers.

Nobody knows why...
I used to be a successful small business owner, happy mother of two. I used to be size 5. I used to take zumba classes three times a week. All of that is just gone now. I've learned to live with that. I had to let my business go, become very involved with my kids' school PTA and was elected as a president this year. And now I can't do even that. The "why" question is always on my mind. Why my symptoms keep coming back? I manged to go the whole year totally symptom free and now I'm back to where I started - brain damaged person. Why is this happening?I just don't get it... |
