Smile Is this Post Concussion Syndrome I'm dealing with?

Hi everyone,
I am new here as of yesterday. I was hoping anyone with similiar symptoms could give me some advice. About three years ago I tripped and fell (pretty hard) on a heating vent. I didn't do anything about it because I didn't have any symptoms after the fact. However, for the past year now I have not been feeling ok. I am lightheaded all day everyday. Like I'm not getting the blood flow to the brain like I should be. My vision sometimes is blurry and hazy. My neck and head hurt only on the left side. Sometimes I have a hard time comprehending conversations. My gait is slow and my sleep is really messed up. I have been to doctors who tell me I am suffereing from anxiety. I have had an MRI done on my head and neck and the only thing that was found was a small cyst in the left side of my throat. Could these be signs of post concussion syndrome? If so, how does a doctor diagnose this? Are there other tests that can be performed to show if I do have this?
Thanks so much in advance!!!

Hi and welcome.

It's difficult to say if this is PCS or something else, although the symptoms you describe are consistent with PCS. It just seems unusual that these symptoms would spontaneously start a couple of years after the head bump, but the brain is a complex organ and just about anything is possible.

Regardless of the cause, you do have symptoms to address. You may want to see a clinical neuropsychologist for a neuropsychological assessment. These can be expensive but if you have health insurance it may be covered; if you are seeing a neurologist or physiatrist they should be able to provide a referral.

In addition to this site you might visit the Brain Injury Association for your state for general brain injury information and specialists in your state.

Best to you, let us know how things progress.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition.

Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life.

lynny31,

Welcome to NeuroTalk.

I wonder if you have had any traumas that may have caused your current symptoms. Have you had an surgeries with general anesthesia ? Anesthesia can cause symptoms like to are experiencing. A high fever can also cause concussion like symptoms.

You could also have a hormone imbalance even at a young age. Check out https://www.womensinternational.com/..._referral.html for a referral to a specialist in bio-identical hormones. If this is your problem, getting your hormones correct will be like getting a new life. A generic gyno uses a shot gun approach that is not adequate. A targeted approach can do wonders.

Hope these ideas help.

My best to you.

Thanks everyone for responding. Interesting comment about hormones. I do have problems there and actually tested for low female hormones. I have went to gynos who just want to put me on birth control and not address the specific low hormone. I do wonder if maybe this is the culprit. I guess I never put 2 and 2 together thinking that hormones could cause all these symptoms. Interesting! I also was put under antesthetia (don't think that's spelled right). How can that effect your well being? It was approx. 2 years ago for a D&C procedure. I suffered extremely bad after, with numerous infections, and prolonged antibiotic useage. If that be the case, how do I overcome these symptoms from going under?
Thanks so much for all of your advice!!! I would be nice to be able to put all the pieces together eventually

I believe you could also check out posts from Estersdoll and she posted the specific tests that were run on her. She also states that her life was given back to her after finding the coreect doctor would run these tests.

Anesthesia is a calculated chemical poisoning of the nervous system. Many have difficulties recovering from it. It is compared to Chemo Brain that cancer patients go through.

The vitamin and supplement s regimen is helpful to your brain's need to detoxify.

The infection can also create havoc with the brain as it floods the body with toxins.

I highly recommend Women's International as a referral source. My wife and many of her friends have successfully used WI for referrals and compounded hormones. Some of her friends were in their early 30's and found great relief from proper hormone balance.

Gynos tend to use patented hormone analogs that are similar but not the same as the hormones the body needs. They can cause side effects that bio-identicals do not cause. Bio-identicals do need to be carefully balance requiring some trial and error. Once the proper balance is achieved, an annual blood check will likely keep everything going good.

Be careful with so-called bio-identical specialists. Some chiros dabble and so do some naturopaths. My wife see a Registered Nurse Practitioner who only deals with women's health. My wife takes a precisely measured amount of progesterone, estrogen and DHEA. Her skins stays good and her moods and other issues are good and stable.

Your gut may also need some help with pro-biotics. I have little experience with that.

I hope you can take advantage of a good specialist.

My best to you.

Hi Mark from Idaho again. I would have to say you are probably one of the smartest people I have spoken too in awhile, including in the medical profession. Not to discount all the other good advice I have been given on here though! You absolutely seem to know what you are talking about. I often thought that maybe my hormones were wreaking havoc on me especially after my miscarriage. I didn't know how much they could effect me though. I have already checked out the website you provided about the bio-identical hormones and filled out the questionarre. I am sooooo thankful I found this website. Are you sure your not a physician? I will also check out the vitamin and supps. posts as well to see about detoxing. Do you know of any specific post that would be beneficial for dextoxing the brain in the vitamin forum? I haven't really checked that out so I will do some investigating!!! Thank you soooo much everyone on here. I definately feel more hopeful now about getting back to my old self

All my symptoms developed after my head injury over I'd say within a 2-3 year period. Hard to remember so long after the fact, but it is definitely possible. Perhaps even common.
