I haven't so much had flashbacks but anything containing chemical scares me. (Gas can, cleaning chemicals, tankers etc)

It was months and months after my horrific MVA before I had a flashback. My husband spilled some coffee on the maker's heating element and, I thought, "That smells like exploding airbags." The next thing I knew, I was back IN the car. Not thinking about the accident - but RELIVING it. Wow! Until you have a flashback, you can't appreciate what they are.
It took A LOT of work to get my PTSD enough under control for me to get back in a car. However, it will NEVER be my happy place and I can't even stand being a passenger in urban traffic.
See a psychologist, a PTSD diagnosis, alone, might be enough to get you a longer recovery break .
