Angry concussion

hi all , im 16 years old and 9 months ago i was hit in the head at my hockey game. The doctor said i had a concussion that would last about 2 weeks but has gone on alot longer. Since then i have made little improvements. After going to a chiropractor a couple months in the concussion , it seemed to make my neck worse.. I am going to try physiotherapy soon and was just wondering what you guys recommend for healing. And also what exercise can i do as i have gained weight and feel really bad about myself for it.

Welcome to NeuroTalk.

Chiro can be too aggressive, especially if the chiro did the 'turn the head and pop the neck' adjustment. The subtle injury to the neck often needs a gentler approach. Physio may help with your neck. You also need to be disciplined to rest and sleep with your head and neck in a good straight posture. Otherwise. it never gets a chance to heal.

What symptoms are you still having ?

Could you elaborate a little on good sleeping posture, Mark? I.e. is sleeping on your side OK as long as your head isn't tucked?

The chiro definitely did the neck pop and after about a month and a half so of going to him for treatment, i realized it wasn't helping and only making it worse. In fact my neck never really hurt b4 the injury. As for symptoms from my head injury i still get headaches from activity and sun, i also feal light headed at times when im doing something physical, and concentrating at school gives me headaches. I also sometimes feel pain in the back of my eyes. My back hurts when i stand to long and my neck is almost always in pain. I was thinking of getting neck massages as well. Thanks for the help!

Sorry to hear about your injury. You are going through a tough time! I would suggest lots of quiet time and targeted therapies. What have you had in terms of diagnosis of specific symptoms? Who has seen you besides the chiro?

Are you in the Vancouver area or more rural? I can try to suggest some places to go.

You definitely should get your vestibular and visual processing assessed. If those are out of whack, you need therapies to get them working properly again.

Hang in there!!! And don't do anything (sports!) etc. That is risking another hit to the head.

What happened: Legs pulled forward by a parent's hockey stick while resting at the side of the rink at a family skate....sent me straight back. I hit the back of my head (with helmet) on the ice, bounced a few times, unconscious for a few minutes. September 11, 2011. Off work since then…I work part-time at home when I can. It has been hell but slowly feeling better (when I am alone☺).

Current symptoms: Vision problems (but 20/20 in each eye alone!) – convergence insufficiency – horizontal and vertical (heterophoria), problems with tracking and saccades, peripheral vision problems, eyes see different colour tints; tinnitus 24/7 both ears; hyperacusis (noise filter gone!), labyrinthian (inner ear) concussion, vestibular dysfunction (dizzy, bedspins, need to look down when walking); partial loss of sense of smell; electric shocks through head when doing too much; headaches; emotional lability; memory blanks; difficulty concentrating. I still can’t go into busy, noisy places. Fatigue. Executive functioning was affected – multi-tasking, planning, motivation. Slight aphasia. Shooting pain up neck and limited mobility at neck. Otherwise lucky!

Current treatments: Vestibular therapy, Vision therapy, amantadine (100 mg a day), acupuncture and physiotherapy for neck, slow return to exercise, magnesium, resveratrol, omega 3 fish oils, vitamins D, B and multi. Optimism and perserverance.

hi there thank you so much for your post, im more rural, specifically in abbotsford , i have seen dan bos twice but since i went to him my neck pain got much worse so i stopped. I have also went to the children's hospital in vancouver and seen a specialist once and was order'd to a ct scan , it appears that nothing significant came from it or they would have called me. As for symptoms , i have experienced eye pain and headaches all around my head , as as well as back pain and neck pain regularly. Thank you so much for helping , it truly means alot to me
