Hey Everyone, new member here. I got a concussion on 8/3 and my life hasn't been the same since. I went to my normal doctor on 8/4 and he said that I might have a slight concussion based on my symptoms (light sensitive, sensitive to noise, headache, confusion) so he stated I should take that day and the next day off to get some rest. I went back on 8/6 and one hour into work I started bawling my eyes out uncontrollably. I was so overwhelmed with everything that I just broke down. My brain couldn't process anything and I just lost it. I took my two hour commute back home and went right to the ER.
I got a CAT scan and it came out fine so that was good, and once again they told me i had a mild concussion and to get some rest. At this point I got a note from the doctor stating I should be out the rest of the week and to see a neurologist on Monday. Monday the 11th comes and I got to my neurologist. He diagnosed me with having PCS and once again I got a doctors note stating that I should rest the 11th-13th, start by working from home very limited on the 14th, and then go back to work on the 18th. This just wasn't good enough for my bosses. They stated I HAD to work on the 11th from home, and I must go in on the 13th to resume working full time. I'm having an extremely hard time focusing and getting my job done, anything that involves using critical thinking I'm pretty much useless in, and my productivity has gone way down. It being a sales environment I have quotas so I have a fear that I'm going to lose my job. Any advice will help. Thank you! |

First of all.. Welcome
How did you get injured? What kind of work do you do? Do you have FMLA at your office? If so, if you have a doctors note, they can not force you to go back. Do you have short term disability? Same thing as above. Please rest! You are just a few weeks in... there are people on here that are up to 15 years in to this... I am personally 7 months in... today I am going to a neurologist that specializes in physical medicine and neurorehabilatation I look forward to getting to know more about you!

Lost about 10-12 hours from about 3 hours after the accident to the next day...Experienced terrible brain fog for over a month, plus intense headaches, nausea, dizziness, cognitive difficulties, disorientation, no short term memory, depression and just an overall hangover feeling daily. Current Situation: I'm about 7 months in and my local neurologist has waived her white flag and therefore I am headed to Dallas to be seen (I have family there). The headaches are still daily. I have nausea, dizziness as well. Drugs I have been on- Vicodin (off), Naproxen (off), proanolol (off), topamax (off), cataflam (off), Midrin (off), Flexeril (off) and now Namenda XR (off), Nortrptylin (off), Verapamil (off) Therapy- Osteopath, Vestibular and balance therapy, fuzion/soft tissue massage, acupuncture Drs- ER (no help), GP, Chiropractor, Neurologist and Osteopath |

I actually got it while playing volleyball lol. I dove and hit my head on the ground. As soon as I did it, I knew something was wrong. Lets hope I can sneak in some rest in the upcoming days and I'll take a look on here for some vitamins and medication that seems to work best for everyone. |

maristgrad,
Welcome to NeuroTalk. Are you in the US ? What state do you live in ? Have you tried finding a concussion clinic for some better support ? Many colleges and high schools use them for their sports teams. It is not uncommon for a concussion to take 6 weeks to resolve. I can't imagine a 2 hour commute leaving you with any ability to work. You have a lot of challenges to overcome to work. I suggest you take it very slow. My best to you.

If your organization has over 50 people and you are in the US you have FMLA... now, with FMLA you do not get paid, it just saves your job for 12 weeks... pay is where STD comes in... at some companies you have to exhaust all your sick and vacation time before you can apply.. check with you HR! Please listen to your doctor and not your bosses!

I really like the president of my company and I would put them in a very tough spot if I left (FMLA or Short term disability) because I am the most senior employee here. In the end I feel like I have to do what is best for me. This forum is awesome by the way. |

You do them at the same time... FMLA just secures you job... STD is what pays you while you are out... it is at a much lower rate but it does give you some kind of income... are you salary or commission? are you a W-2 or 1099?

With your injury, you aren't doing any favors for your career or your company by not taking the time to allow your brain to recover fully. Right now rest is the best thing you can do. Hoping all goes well and it works out for you. |
