Default Melatonin + L-theanine

So ive taken melatonin 10mg for years every now and then and never had a problem with any side effects.

Just started taking melatonin + L-theanine (6mg melatonin 400 mg theanine) because of some horrible sleep issues these past few months.

Ive noted that since I started this I wake up in the am with an even worse pounding headache than normal and Im super dizzy and lightheaded for a few hours afterwords.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks

Have you tried L-Tryptophan instead of the L-Theanine for the sleep benefits ?

No I have not Mark. I honestly know nothing about this stuff. Only reason I grabbed this one over the plain melatonin is because the pharmacist says it works better for him. So I figured what the heck.

Should also note I take it with 50mg of amitryptilyne (spellings off) before bed. That doesnt do anything for me, but neurologist insists I must take it.

So its not the melatonin. Its the L-theanine causing these extra massive headaches. Noted it over the past few days of taking it. Within an hour of taking it I get this unreal stabbing headache, and intense brain fog. Only way I noticed that gets rid of it is caffeine.

Whats up with that?

i took every supplement known to man and only got relief when I took ambien with Xanax. I am NOT recommending this. it was approved by psych and doctor, and I am a BIG guy. that Xanax dose is very small, the ambien dose is big.

I still wake up with tremors that are getting worse and vivid dreams, but at least I sleep through the night after waking up once.
good luck!!!

btw, what were your horrible sleep issues?

Can melatonin be taken long term? I was told one builds up a resistance that reduces its efficacy.

Yes it can. I usually go on a two week cycle every few months. Ill take it for two weeks, then not take it again for two or three months.

I maybe incorrect in stating that the L-theanine is causing me issues. Maybe its just coincidence. I dont know, since I really have no clue what it does.

My sleep issues have been odd since the injury. For the first month, all I did was sleep. Couldnt get enough of it. Went off and on until around mid June. Since then, I cannot fall asleep. No matter how exhausted I am. Even sleep meds didnt work.

Basically ill start to doze, but the headaches will keep me awake. Eventually ill fall asleep for an hour, then the headaches will wake me back up. This happens all night long. I usually get a total of 2-4 hours, but none consecutive. Its basically migraine like headaches on either my left side, or the front of my head. Sometimes my wife says ill wake up having a seizure.

Its rather annoying. Occasionally ill be lucky and get a good 5 hours of sleep, maybe once a week.

Its frustrating, but im managing.
