There is an important point on page 2 of the above article. It says:
Good quality fats and protein are very important. Those of us who have avoided eating fats all our lives are having greater brain degeneration late in life. This is because we have been missing the fats needed to make neurotransmitters, cell membranes (the brain of each cell) and hormones. Whether or not you are afraid of fats, here are some suggestions. Eat the organic chicken with the skin and eat duck and chicken eggs including the yolk. Supplement your foods with cold-water fish oil and coconut oil from the best sources. Eat 4 teaspoons of coconut oil/day, more if you can, to avoid/cure dementia (see Dr. Mary Newport’s article) |
Air Travel Tips
Here is an excellent article about air travel. I contributed my tips from experience traveling frequently during the early stages of my recovery to this article. The part about seating that reduces visual stimulation is of paramount importance to me.

Hormone & TBI

More on using hormones to heal brain injury.
Concussion can cause hypopituitarism, neuroendocrine dysfunction, growth hormone deficiency, other hormone deficiency and insufficiency and other endocrine related imbalances that can cause many symptoms that are associated with "brain injury" but are actually caused by endocrine system dysfunction that was caused by the brain injury. It can be treated and with treatment the symptoms will improve or be completely eradicated. http://www.dcoe.health.mil/MediaCent...sfunction.aspx http://www.dcoe.health.mil/Content/N...rence_Card.pdf http://www.dcoe.health.mil/Content/N...mendations.pdf http://www.dcoe.health.mil/Content/N...ing_Slides.pdf |

Here's scientific evidence why everyone needs sleep to heal.
While you sleep, your brain is able to clean itself out of toxins and other things that it needs to. http://news.sciencemag.org/brain-beh...te-brainwasher I speculate that there are more things it needs to clean out after a concussion, which may be why people recovering from a concussion are so tired! And why it's such a good idea to rest when your body tells you that you need to. |

The links I posted earlier don't seem to be working now and I can't edit my post. Here are some more links about hormonal imbalance and neuroendocrine dysfunction after concussion:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/ar...ne-deficiency/ http://w.jwci.org/uploadedFiles/Home...ituitarism.pdf http://www.dcoe.mil/content/Navigati...ing_Slides.pdf http://tbi-research.org/12hormone.pdf http://www.tbi-research.org/neurotrauma09kreber.pdf If you start looking, you can fond dozens and dozens of articles about growth hormone deficiency, neuroendocrine dysfunction, hypopituitarism and post-traumatic hypopituitarism caused by mTBI if you start Googling them. This seems to be what a lot of experts are researching these days. I suspect in the next 10 years or so, that a lot more information will be gained about this subject, and that will include changing the hormone levels that are considered "normal" or average so that more people can be treated. There also seems to be some discrepancies among experts opinions concerning different gender needs of GH. |

I'm new to this forum (a fall in my condo 8 months ago has me dealing with similar symptoms to yours). If you rest and don't try to push through it you will heal. Reading through the stories on this forum gives me hope. I had a very similar experience to you. I didn't realize I had a problem at first and now here I am with getting tired just from talking to my friends, sensitivity to noise and getting dizzy from just walking. BUT each week when I don't overdo it I do see improvement. The key is to have patience. It sucks to lose your social life, especially at your age when going out is expected but you just have to tell your friends you are sick and just stay home. Let yourself heal now. It's better to have a boring year at 20 than to live it up in misery and suffer for longer. Rest now so you can enjoy the rest of your 20s when you are ready. You might want to postpone the trip - America isn't going anywhere. Our pizza will be here waiting for you over the next 80 years of your life. You will get here! When you are depressed come to this forum and see there are people who understand. Hang in there! |

Compound protects brain cells after traumatic brain injury
Article focuses on its use shortly after brain injury, but it has been shown that injury can kill cells up to 20 years after injury, so compound could eventually be given to those with chronic brain injury symptoms years later http://now.uiowa.edu/2014/09/compoun...c-brain-injury |
This P7C3 group of compounds are the target of the research being started by Calico, the company started by a Genentech and Google group. The research is just starting.

Harvard Psychiatrist recommends weed for Concussions?
Has anyone looked into this? Seems to go against everything I have thought or thought I knew about Marijuana. Just for the record I am a devout Mormon who believes that any addictive substance should be avoided - life is hard enough sober let alone with an altered consciousness. IE helping my concussed 16 year old daughter while intoxicated would not really work - if anything could drive me to drink it would be the past year. If anyone has personal experience or knowledge please IM me. Thanks

Music Therapy
Yes good suggestion Lara. I have that book - some inspiring stuff in there!
Anyhow, apologies if someone has posted on this before but I can thoroughly recommend listening sessions to music that ideally gives you goose bumps! It really feels like it does me a world of good... Obviously only for those that can handle music cognitively etc. and clearly one must take precautions re volume, avoiding in ear earphones and sticking to (lighter) classical music in the main, particularly in the beginning of course... Happy to recommend/post a playlist of inspiring classical music if anyone is interested :) A lot of stuff online on this but here are some more relevant links: http://www.brainline.org/content/201...red-brain.html http://braininjury.blogs.com/brainin...in-injury.html http://www.alzheimers.net/2014-07-21...ntia-patients/ |
For some of us, in ear or over the ear ear phones are best. They reduce the ambient sounds so the brain has less work load filtering the ambient sounds. Room speakers often have too much echo and can be stressful, vs restful.

fair enough Mark and deffo over ears i'd recommend too - re inears, though, speaking from my own experience i'd say beware as my brain simply could not handle that amount of stimulation for about a couple of months post injury - made my tinnitus worse too in an odd way, ie not through ringing but other noises started featuring...
